Movie Reviews of Ever Since the World EndedMovie Review: Life after the plague in liberal San Francisco Summary: 3 StarsI still haven't decided if this is a serious movie or a spoof of San Francisco liberal politics. A devastating plague has struck the Earth and killed most of the people. There are 168 people left alive in San Francisco. Two of the survivors decide to make a video documentary of of the lives of the survivors. Several of the survivors are interviewed and they describe what they recall of life before the plague, some of the events related to the plague, and how they get on 10+ years later. Some of the video is shot in the `slice of life' or reality show format in which we see the everyday lives of the survivors. The survivors mostly live alone or in small groups, but appear to occasionally work together when necessary.
Some aspects of this video are quite compelling and typical of this genre. We learn how the survivors scavenge the ruins looking for food and useful bits of equipment, how several of them have taken long hikes outside the city to look for other survivors, etc. One of the survivors has a pretty serious mental problem and is clearly a danger to the others. All the survivors are trying to make sense of their new world, the younger ones who were only children when the old world collapsed finding it easier than those who were in their 20s and 30s when the world fell apart. Other aspects of this video though are simply unbelievable - several of the survivors have retained their liberal San Francisco worldview and have built their lives upon this. One of the women wants to get pregnant and have a child, but doesn't want the father involved in any way, and is sounding out potential partners, who then want to discuss it with his wife. Another woman tries to keep the harmony amongst the survivors with a bunch of inclusive, consensus reaching psycho-babble. Children are still taught to play piano, and political correctness abounds.
I'm not sure if this was meant to be serious or a spoof. It is moderately entertaining for anyone interested in the post-apocalyptic film genre with a few interesting and thoughtful story threads, although I wouldn't recommend anyone actually buy it (watch it once as a rental - no need to add it to your collection). Some of the characters are laughably ridiculous. There isn't a lot of action in this film, it is mostly dialogue, so if you're looking for an action movie, this isn't it. Rating is 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 stars.
