Movie Reviews of EveningMovie Review: Beautiful and sad reflection on life Summary: 4 Stars
This is a movie that received incredibly harsh criticism. Too harsh in my opinion. Clearly this is not a movie for everyone; the movie moves at a slower pace and there are some holes in the plot, but I believe both actually contribute to the mood and message of the movie. As a movie seen through the eyes of a dying and confused old woman, played brilliantly by Vanessa Redgrave, there is likely to be holes in her memory, thus the plot reflects that. What this movie offers is a reflection on life; a life full of regret, missed opportunities, hardship, friendship, happiness and life lessons. The movie is beautifully shot, with a perfect soundtrack. Though it is true that many talented actors only had a few moments onscreen, the moments they did have were simply amazing and would not have conveyed nearly the same amount of emotion and force had someone with less experience been given those roles. An example of this would be Meryl Streep, who had very little time onscreen, but was absolutely amazing. Bottom line; this movie is not something everyone can enjoy, but if the characteristics I have described appeal to you, I think you will find it to be an incredibly sad, beautiful, and honest film.
Movie Review: An Actor's Film Summary: 4 Stars
Evening is one of those meaty actor films...where every role has depth and the opportunity to pour skill and talent into even the least of characters. And with those type films, we would expect that all emotion would be dissected and revealed down to the most subtle of reactions.
If you are still reading this review, chances are you dig that kind of movie. Do you love the exploration of character and delving into human relationships? Dysfunction adds to the mix, and the horrified entertainment for the viewer who, from the easy chair, urges the characters, "No, don't do that..." If this sounds appealing, then you are likely to find much to chew on in this film.
The story is a great character study between generations, as well. An added bonus is the tiny moments of healing for characters as they begin to understand each other. The mother daughter combinations were a treat, too.
Movie Review: Deserves to be seen! Summary: 4 Stars
Whoever said you should see it for yourself and make your own judgment was right. Personally, there is no way I would not want to see a film with so many great (and on-the-verge-of-great) talents. I wasn't thrilled, nor was I disappointed. It is a moody work in which not much happens, but I was never bored. The cast was uniformly good. No one was great. Hugh Dancy was the best for me, but then it seemed like the screenwriters had devoted the most attention to his character. Mamie Gummer is mesmerizing to watch because she resembles her mom so much, but she doesn't have her mom's acting chops. This is a big, big story which suffers from being shoehorned into the usual time frame for a movie of this type. Consequently, it is frustrating that some of the characters are not developed as much as we would like. I still think it is worth seeing and will watch it again.
Movie Review: If only.... Summary: 4 Stars
You should see this film if you have ever said, "If only I had done...." You should see this film if you have ever thought, "If only they would write better roles for women." You should see this film if only to see the wonderful scene between the elderly Lila and the dying Ann. And finally, you should see this film if only to watch the great Vanessa Redgrave. She can out act most people, even with her eyes closed, which they are for most of this movie. Even her face in repose, as she sleeps and dreams, is full of expression.
Movie Review: Pleasantly surprised Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the said movie purely on reading about the storyline and thought it would be interesting.
I started watching it on a DVD player while flying from one destination to another which was just over an hour's flight and only saw a small portion of it, so on arrival at home I proceeded to watch it all again and was fascinated from start to finish.
Wonderful cast of actors and very well portrayed.
