Movie Reviews of Evening

Movie Review: A masterpiece!
Summary: 5 Stars

I knew this movie would be good just looking at the list of names of people who are in it. And it was. Actually, it is a true masterpiece.
It speaks to the heart of many many things. Regret; passion; bonds that exist between people; settling in life; memories. The story and how it unfolds are beautifully shown here with inconsequential 'holes'. Keep your focus on what is being told.
I certainly didn't notice any flaws as I watched the movie. The acting, costumes, sets, photography and music blended so well, so seamlessly that it pulled me along as I watched it.
We've all experienced what the lead characters have experienced. We all choose one way or another to go in our life. Each way has regrets as well as positive experiences, it's all in how you view it and what meaning things have for you.
I doubt that anyone could spend time watching this movie and not come away untouched. Highly, highly recommended. Truly a must see.

Movie Review: Mistakes, regrets, and forgiveness
Summary: 5 Stars

Vanessa Redgrave plays the part of Ann who lays dying while being cared for by her two daughters. Regrets from her past begin to haunt Ann and she shares bits and pieces of a weekend that changed her life forever. Flashbacks show Ann as a young girl who is at her friend Lila's wedding where she meeets a man named Harris. Another major character is Buddy (played wonderfully by Hugh Darcy) who is Lila's brother and Ann's friend.
Gradually their story unfolds and Ann relives the interactions of the wedding weekend which impact her for a lifetime. The character of Lila is played by Mamie Gummer as a young girl, and later as her real-life mother Meryl Streep when she comes to tell her dying friend, Ann, goodbye. Vanessa Redgrave's real-life daughter also plays her daughter Constance in the movie. This is a beautiful film of complex relationships which will be enjoyed by some and reviled by others. It is one which I will long remember.

Movie Review: Beautifully Poignant
Summary: 5 Stars

The greatest strength of this movie is in the characters and their portrayal. All of the central characters have depth and refuse to be mere cardboard characters; each have their own triumphs and difficulties, and all are delightfully human. Yet the story is not confusing or bogged down in character details; it flows between the past and the present, with the line between the two blurred as we see through the eyes of the dying mother. I quite literally laughed and cried with these beautiful characters, who make both the lighthearted dancing and the fateful connections believable and interesting. Life is beautiful, complicated, and tragic, and each of these aspects were given some screen time. The central message of the movie, that life can take unexpected turns and that's okay, was not lost on me.

Movie Review: Thought Provoking
Summary: 5 Stars

I have just finished watching Evening and felt I must see what others thought about it. I have not been moved by a film in a very long time - Evening did it for me. I was in awe of Vanessa Redgrave's performance, from her death bed. She is such an amazing actress. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Evening made me long for my best girlfriend/maid of honor, who has passed away; it made me long for my first/long lost love; and, it made me long for my mother, who has also passed away. I enjoyed watching the young Anne (Claire Danes) and then back to the older Anne (Vanessa Redgrave). I found it fascinating thinking about how as young people we live our lives as it comes to us, not knowing what the future holds. This film was heartbreaking, but not to be missed.

Movie Review: Beautiful and Enchanting
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw a screening of this film last week and it was absolutely breathtaking. Each shot is absolutely gorgeous. Think of the hours but more scenic. The visuals made the entire film feel like a dream, as if you were the main character- Vanessa Regrave- looking back on her life. The beauty of the film was matched with the talent in the film. Each actress had an unbelievable performance. With a cast like this, it is hard to believe that performances would be anything less then perfect and trust me they live up to this standard. The story was moved along beautifully with each performance, each shot, and the overall story by Susan Minot.
