Movie Reviews of Evening

Movie Review: Loved the movie, wished it had been marketed better
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved the movie. Granted that I would have seen the movie to watch Hugh Dancy alone, the acting was superior. I loved watching this story unfold and look at the world of regrets and mistakes. I am not on my death bed, but I think we all look back and wonder about that one pivotal day. As Dickens points out in Great Expectations, we all have one day which will alter our lives forever. This one was the one for Ann.

Claire Danes was outstanding. I didn't realize until later that she and Patrick Wilson were in a commercial together. I enjoyed Harris' character but failed to see what it was about him that made her think of him as the love of her life. Then, I bought the book.

The book showed many levels which were either omitted or cut in the movie. The marketing for this one should have been different. It was to me as good as Streep's Bridges of Madison County. I walked away feeling like I could turn around and see the film again. But the trailer leaves you with the impression that something is going to happen which doesn't. Therefore, while I understand some reviewer's disappointment; I did love the movie. I have plans to purchase it upon its release.

Movie Review: Moving
Summary: 5 Stars

This story goes back and forth in time--through dreamlike memories of a dying woman--as she tries to piece together an important chapter of her life. Claire Danes plays the young "Ann" during a weekend in 1953 when she is the Maid of Honor at her best friend's wedding. There she meets a man, Harris, with whom she unexpectedly falls in love. Their moments together--what ultimately only seem like moments in a very long life--are romantic and memorable, and they forever have stars in the sky to remind them of one another after they travel separate paths through adulthood. For the aged Ann (played by Vanessa Redgrave), Harris was the one that got away.

Ann's adult daughters, (Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson) keeping vigil at her deathbed, clearly love their mother and were clearly loved by her. The daughters each face their own (relatively mundane) struggles, but struggles nonetheless, and want very much for their mother to provide the answers and continue to show them the way toward fulfillment.

This is a beautiful movie, and I recommend especially for mothers, daughters, sisters and best friends. I loved it.

Movie Review: AN ENTERTAINING AND TOUCHING FILM
Summary: 5 Stars

The gimmick to this story works pretty well -- the final hours of a person's life and their fading back and forth between dream and reality, while finally confronting faded regrets. The acting consistently superb, with Streep, of course, at the top of the heap in a very brief part. I didn't find out until after viewing that Streep and Mamie Gummer are actually mother and daughter, as are Regrave and the actress who portrays her character's daughter. Cool casting!

Period research was less than entirely acceptable. Ann looks like a young woman of the 1980s, and Buddy wore his hair unacceptaly (for 1950s) long. Ann's "progressive" attitude about homosexuality/bi-sexuality was totally unacceptable for that era -- rather it seemed to be the filmmaker's statement re today's culture, thereby lacking authenticity or credibility, entirely irrelevant to the story anyhow!

But overall, anyone who has shared the final hours of someone's life with them can appreciate the beautiful way this part of the film was portrayed. This film is well worth your time!

Movie Review: A Favorite Forever! I Loved This Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved every character and all of the music. The music had the same wonderful haunting melody of (1981) Brideshead Revisited, if you remember that music. I purchased the DVD for two people and bought the book for myself. I literally watched the DVD 6 times in two days - replaying a few scenes to watch more closely - the details were amazing. It is almost as if they said, "What will make a great movie? What will people like? They will love the sea. They will love a boat. They will love a little wealth. They will want to see a tragic love. They will want to see . . ." Then they did it all - even to the farewell scene in the rain in the City. This movie has something for everyone. The scene toward the end with the beautiful Vanessa Redgrave and the soft, loving Meryl Streep was one you want to rewind and rewind - so as not to miss a word. For anyone who has had a 'best friend' and lost her, and I have had, this movie is a must. For anyone who has had a great love, or two, and who hasn't, this movie is a must.

Movie Review: Spend An Evening With These Fine Actresses
Summary: 5 Stars

Caught a special screening of the film and I was just blown away by the performances. It's one thing to know that these actresses are in the film but to then see them together on the screen is a joy.

If you're a fan of The Notebook you'll love this film. It's a sweeping romance that takes place against a beautiful backdrop of the New England cliffside. The cinematography takes full advantage of the location.

Claire Danes has come to visit her good friend on her wedding weekend and she gets swept up in a romance with Harris, played by Patrick Wilson. Too bad for Hugh Dancy's character, cause he's got some issues.

This is all happening in flashback as Claire Danes' character, now played by Vanessa Redgrave, recounts the tale to her grown daughters.

The performances are top notch. Meryl Streep shows up later in the film but I don't want to spoil it. I cried at least five times throughout the film and I can't wait to see it again.

Highly recommended!
