Movie Reviews of Eve's Bayou

Movie Review: Where's Debbi's Oscar?
Summary: 5 Stars

Director Kasi Lemmons creates a movie that should be admired by greats such as Spielberg and Scorese. Eve's Bayou is riveting and captivating, leaving the audience engaged at every turn and begging for more of these characters by the end. In an almost dream-like Louisiana setting, Eve's Bayou provides an cinematic orgasm of eyes and mind. We are taken on a journey by a young Eve (Jurnee Smollett) and we get to see the summer in her life when tragedy dismantled her innocence and essentially revealed devastating secrets about her beloved father. The story is filled with secrets, lies, truths, love, and a complicated sibling rivalry. Eve's relationship with sister Cicly( Megan Good) is typical for girls. Both share a deep love for their father(Samuel L. Jackson) and compete for his affection. Cicly is the average teenaged girl who is struggling with becoming a woman while fighting to keep her family together and her father happy. While she adores her father, she begrudges her mother, Roz(Lynn Whitfield), showing us the electra complex at its best. The beautiful Roz is struggling with her failed marriage and disobedient children and becomes nervous from all the stress.

While this movie is packed with an all star cast (Lynn Whitfield, Jurnee Smollet, Samuel L. Jackson, Lisa Nicole Carson, Megan Good, and Diahann Carroll) the star of this film is definitely Debbi Morgan. Her portrayal as the psychic counselor/black widow sister of Louis (Samuel L. Jackson) is her best role yet. Her performance in this film rivals that of great black actresses like Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg, and Halle Barry. She really becomes Mozelle Batiste and we totally forget that she is a staple of cheesy daytime soap operas playing Angela Baxter of the famous black supercouple Angie and Jesse of All My Children. The scene when she describes the killing of her husband by a lover is amazing. I have watched it over and over again and I plan to watch many more times because she really is capable of fully pulling you in. The chemistry between Debbi and Jurnee is amazing and they make for a amazing duo on screen. They are such similar characters and its a shame that both were cheated out of Oscar nominations for this masterpiece. Debbi Morgan became my favorite actress the day I saw this film and I also look forward to seeing more from Kasi Lemmons. This is the best movie that I have seen in years (maybe ever) and is deserves to be on any list of the top films.

Movie Review: Powerful and Resonant Southern Gothic
Summary: 5 Stars

"Eve's Bayou" is a modern masterpiece of Southern Gothic. Writer/director Kasi Lemmons weaves an intricate story of love, death, and coming of age in the bayous of Louisiana. As the film begins, Eve Batiste (played by Jurnee Smollett) is one of the three children of Louis Batiste (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and Roz Batiste (played by Lynn Whitfield). Louis, as the town doctor, is a man of wealth and status in the rural African-American community of Eve's Bayou; but he has a weakness for the many women who are drawn to him, and Roz tries to pretend not to know. Eve's older sister Cicely (played by Meagan Good), a girl on the threshold of womanhood, seems particularly torn by the disintegration of the Batiste family. Eve's Bayou is also a community where vodoun plays a daily role in the lives of the people; Roz's sister Mozelle (played by Debbi Morgan) is a practitioner of the art, who has lost three husbands and fears she may be cursed, a "black widow." Also crucial to the vodoun elements of the story is Elzora (played by Diahann Carroll), an old woman of the community who has a reputation as a "witch." Eve becomes aware of her father's infidelities, grows angry over one particularly horrible accusation, and unleashes a chain of events that ends in tragedy; and right up until the end of the film, one is never altogether sure of what really happened. I particularly liked how the shift from color to black-and-white in crucial scenes signalled the movement from the normal everyday world we all share to an alternate world that links memory and precognition. Haunting, disturbing, and beautifully filmed, "Eve's Bayou" demands and rewards multiple viewings.

Movie Review: Great movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit this movie was great. I have it at home. I really love the director's cut because I sensed that there was more to it than meets the eye. Kasi Lemmons did a great job doing this film. I especially loved when Cisely and Roz came toe to toe with each other when it came to Louis and Cisely decided that she wanted to go away because she couldn't take it anymore with everyone adult in the house are acting like children in the movie. I say that the children acted better than the adults in the movie. Cisely and Roz remind me of my mother and I when it comes to my father a bit.

Movie Review: A Masterpiece of Epic Poportion
Summary: 5 Stars

I won't bore you by repeating some of the wonderful and precise acolades you've already read attributed to this brilliant piece of African-American Cinema, but I will prose one question: Why weren't Jurnee Smolett or Debbie Morgan considered for an Academy Award nomination for their BRILLIANT & GROSSLY UNDERATED performances in this film? They were overlooked, but Hallies' questionable performance in "Monster's Ball" is the yardstick by which all future African-American female actresses will be measured by...It just doesn't seem fair.

Movie Review: sleeper
Summary: 5 Stars

i've always liked dark movies with a twist and something magical or abnormal happening in the plot. Eve's Bayou is exactly the kind of movie you'll fall in love with if you like mystery, suspense, and the supernatural in your films. Though it's not a popular film - which I blame TOTALLY on the advertising, or lack there of, its very well done with surprisingly good child actors in the roles, everyone was believable in their part. I would recommend this to anyone.
