Movie Reviews of Eureka - Season Two

Movie Review: Great TV show, but my discs skip
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this show, and the DVD's are generally great. Good image quality and fun extras. However, my copy of season two skips during certain scenes. This is the first time I've taken them out of their case, as well, so they shouldn't be scratched.
I just wanted to post about this in case other people are also having the same issue. Sometimes a singular product is defective but if this is happening to many people then it could be a good idea for future buyers to be prepared for the possibility that their product will not be fully functional throughout. It's only slightly annoying so far as it has only happened once per disc and I don't think I'll go to the trouble of replacing it.

Overall, though, this show is AMAZING. It's capable of being lighthearted and also deeply touching while presenting us with a never-boring town which I would consider almost Utopian. In many ways, this show reminds me of Star Trek : TNG if everyone on board were transported to a cozy mountain town in the US circa the 2000's. I have always loved watching brainiacs interact with one another and pull imagined inventions out of their fantastic brains! Also, I find myself emotionally invested with the characters and I think the actors do a wonderful job of giving depth to them. In fact, I think the greatest strength of this show is the cast itself. They are infinitely watchable!

Some really great performances include the comedic acting of Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter. He is incredibly dedicated to making this character likable and believable. He pushes the Sheriff's foibles just far enough to make him endearing without putting him in the "buffoon" category, and isn't afraid to take a spill or two if the scene calls for it. He also really has touched me on a personal level when dealing with being a single parent. His thoughts on the difficulties of this task have given me new insight on my own father's struggles as a single parent, and I think this is the mark of a strong and engaging actor.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield is great as Allison Blake, the mother of a child with autism. I also love her in her various professional roles on Eureka, but what really stands out to me is her ability to show the ambivalent struggle that parents of children with autism go through. Loving your child but not being fully capable of connecting with them is difficult, and I find it a credit to this show that it addresses that issue while still showing that children with autism often have special gifts and abilities which certainly have value in this world. Also, on a girly note, I absolutely love her fashion sense. :)

Joe Morton as Henry Deacon always impresses me with his delivery of lines. His presentation lends a real gravity and sense of stability to Eureka that we don't often see on TV shows like this. His skill level reminds me so much of that of Morgan Freeman and other actors of that caliber, in fact, that I wonder why Joe Morton hasn't broken through into major movies long ago as one of those very expensive-to-hire Hollywood leads. He definitely has the chops for it. I feel as though my mind is expanding just watching him come up with solutions to problems, and I certainly feel a great deal of sympathy for his character in connection with certain tragic events that have transpired over these two seasons.

A big surprise for me was Jordan Hinson as Zoe Carter. It's very rare to see much talent in young teenage actors (especially when they are often chosen for looks rather than ability), but she really has a talent that shines through. I've really come to adore her character and appreciate her ability to both inspire emotion and laughter in the viewer. Her chemistry with Colin Ferguson is great and they are truly believable as father and daughter.

Overall, even the minor characters in this show are never annoying, which is impressive! I haven't yet met a side character who didn't seem interesting or potentially important, which is a credit to this show. Often TV shows will create flat side characters who are only there as props to move the storyline along, but I've yet to feel that way about anyone in this show.

With the low cost for the season and the high quality of the show I would buy the DVD even if lots of people might be having skipping issues here and there. Just do your research so that you'll be emotionally prepared (haha) for some slight annoyance in case this is a product-wide issue. I find that it's best to show support to your favorite shows with your wallet, so I'm still glad I bought these DVDs and I hope my small contribution will help keep this show running for many more seasons. If the skipping continues and I research to find that this is only happening to my product then I may go ahead and buy another whole set rather than returning this one.

I do love the fact that the product is packaged in recycled materials, though. I don't think it's the actual packaging that's done this to the discs as the plastic trays are very stable and keep the discs from moving the slightest bit and the cardboard box is substantial enough not to allow for bending of the product.

Summary of Eureka - Season Two

It's the same small town but the hidden secrets are even bigger in the city of Eureka when it returns to DVD with Eureka: Season Two! The 3-disc DVD set includes every episode from season two plus over 10 hours of behind-the-scenes extras. Discover the mysteriously-surreal, quirky series when Eureka: Season Two appears on DVD!
Plenty of new television series need a season or two to sort themselves out, and as this three-disc, 13-episode (plus bonus features) box set from the second season (2007) reveals, the Sci-Fi Channel's Eureka is still a work in progress--which is not a bad thing, considering that it's one of the more provocative and ambitious shows out there. For the uninitiated, here's the basic premise: Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson), accompanied by his teenage daughter Zoe (Jordan Hinson), is stationed in Eureka, a picturesque little burg somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Eureka is hardly Anytown, USA; indeed, this is the place where "the world's greatest thinkers" live and work, most of them at Global Dynamics, "the most advanced scientific facility in the world." It's also a place where exceedingly strange things happen on a regular basis. In Season Two, those happenings include people spontaneously combusting, becoming invisible, turning into gold, or simply disappearing (and leaving nothing behind--not even a memory that they ever existed); a "personal force field" that's growing so large and so fast that it will soon engulf the whole town, and maybe even the whole world; freaky weather that changes by the moment; and even an experiment to re-create the Big Bang inside a Global Dynamics lab, leading to some unexpected side effects.

These developments are all presented with enough cool special effects and scientific techno-babble to make Eureka a perfectly viable and sometimes quite dramatic science fiction diversion. But there's more--much more. Sometimes this is a show about relationships: Jack and Zoe (custody becomes an issue when Jack's ex, played by Olivia D'Abo, shows up in the early episodes); Jack and Allison Blake (Salli Richardson), Global Dynamics' new boss (their growing attraction is complicated by the continued presence of her ex, a genius scientist type); Jack and his pal Henry (Joe Morton), who blames Jack for his girlfriend's death but gradually learns there's more to it than that. Much of the time it's a comedy, heavy on the quirks; and, in a change from the first year, it's also a serial, with several story arcs continuing over the course of the season. All of that can make Eureka a but convoluted and hard to get a handle on, but this show is a keeper. Extensive bonus features include deleted scenes, gag reels, podcast commentaries, and a good deal more. --Sam Graham
