Movie Reviews of Esther and the King

Movie Review: Great Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw this movie eons ago as a child and never forgot it. I only remembered bits and pieces of the film. I searched Amazon.com for months to find it, but couldn't. Then suddenly....there it was! Esther and the King! I purchased it at once. The film was just as I remembered. The only problem with the DVD is the audio. You cannot hear the dialogue clearly and with no subtitles it's hard to pick up what's going on. I hope they can re-release it with a better audio track.

Movie Review: Silly and sex-laden, but Joan Collins is gorgeous
Summary: 3 Stars

This Italian movie is a good example of the so-called "peplum" genre of movies in which tales from ancient history or the Bible were retold with lots of heaving bosoms and flashing swords. As one may gather from the title, the subject of this film is the story of Esther and her romance with King Ahauserus (Xerxes) of Persia, and her battle to save the Jews from massacre at the hands of the evil Haman. For a biblical epic, there's quite a bit of scantily-clad female flesh (especially Rosalba Neri, as Haman's wickedly scheming mistress, in a very suggestive scene), and a lot of military action. Not the most edifying, but the young Joan Collins is stunningly beautiful as Esther, so I'd mark this down as worth watching on an idle afternoon. Just don't expect much insight into the Biblical story or the history of ancient Persia.

It was ok.I saw part of it on t.v. and wanted to know how the movie was I can only say it was just o.k.

Movie Review: Poor source material and non-letter box format sours
Summary: 2 Stars

I've been waiting for years to see this film, shot by Mario Bava before he broke into directing, in letterbox format. Prior to this DVD, the film has only been available on a grainy (16mm source) VHS tape from Sinister Cinema and a much crisper and cleaner tape from 20th century. The MAJOR dissapointment here is that the film is not letterboxed (it was originally shot 2.35:1). The print quality is better than the Sinister Cinema, but remains dark, grainy and sometimes badly framed. Random chapter titles. Let's do this one right, somebody, please.

Movie Review: Don't be fooled!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is definitely NOT the biblical story of Queen Esther and the King.

If you are looking for a hollywood classic that is not true to the bible, then this might be for you.

If what you are seeking is for a movie of the story of Queen Esther this is NOT the product for you! The only thing it has in common with the bible story are the names! In this case I would suggest you purchase The Bible - Esther or One Night With the King

If you need examples of why this movie is not bibilical at all, let me explain (WARNING: SPOILER IN THE NEXT SENTENCES):

I was shocked when in the first ten minutes of the movie, there was a scene of adultery committed between Vashti and Haman! When the king returns from war, he is greeted by "Lord Mordecai"!!(??) then, in the celebration in the palace, Queen Vashti danced in a bikini like a regular Shakira in front of all the guests, and ended the dance in front of the king, in defiance, ripping off her top!! The king, angered, later orders a servant to smother Vashti with a pillow and kill her!! All this in the first 25 mins of the movie!! Need I say more???
