Movie Reviews of Escape from New York

Movie Review: You're the Duke of New York...You're A Number One!
Summary: 5 Stars

There's many reasons to like John Carpenter's Escape From New York, but I particularly enjoyed watching Donald Pleasance playing the tough-as-nails president. Kurt Russel does a great Clint Eastwood parody throughout, and makes "Snake" jump off the screen. The only flaw with this film is that they set the future in the not-to-distant decade of the 1990's. Perhaps New York needed a few more years before it became the maximum security prison for the entire United States. At any rate, once you get past this minor distraction, you'll find yourself immersed in a race against time, where Snake must rescue the country's top man from a band of crazed lunatics. Watching the film since 9/11 also brings into focus some other interesting aspects. This is one of the few films that uses the World Trade Center as central location. And the whole notion of terrorists flying a plane into a building--well, it almost serves as a prophetic warning of things to come. It just goes to show, in the realm of science fiction, anything is possible.

Movie Review: another john carpenter classic....
Summary: 5 Stars

amidst john carpenter's other cult classics (the thing, halloween, big trouble in little china, assault on precinct 13), escape from new york is probably in my opinion one of the most memorable. not for its storyline (which is a touch cliched), but for its atmosphere. carpenter has always had a talent for creating an atmosphere, he did it in the thing with its cold antarctic setting, and with big trouble in little china with its underground chinatown setting, and here with a "post-apocolyptic" new york setting. kurt russel is in fine form here, not only physically but acting-wise especially. he says fewer lines than one might expect from a protagonist, but his expression and use of eyes (like ive mentioned several times before) is very commendable. van kleef does a good job here as well. much better than its "sequel", escape from l.a. (though i did like that film better than most, since i am a major carpenter fan). a must-buy for carpenter fans or russel fans!

Movie Review: "The Name's Plisskin!"
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is the main reason I bought a DVD player in the first place. It ranks up in my huge collection of movies as one of my favourites because of It's timeless appeal, pulse pounding action, beautiful cinematoraphy (courtesy of Dean Cundey), toe clasping suspense, and that Snake is just so fuckin cool. I heard MGM is goin light on the supplements, so all I gotta say is that in my book, that's a crime and you guys need a blunt object bashed into the side of your head by a eyepatch wearing snake tatooed avenger, because no one wrongs Snake and lives a happy life. So as for the movie, I respect it with every fiber of my being, and Carpenter has ended up consuming at least half of my all time favourite films top ten list. So go do yourself a favor and watch this movie, show it too your children, show it to your friends 'cause this is where it's at when you love badass gun totin anti heroes that bleed fools for a living!

Movie Review: Best Movie Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best movie ever made in my oppinion. I am 32 years old and have been an avid John Carpenter fan since I saw Escape From New York when it was released in 1982. Kurt Russell is the ULTIMATE Anti-Hero! Although he does his best "Clint Eastwood", he is the coolest. Movies that are made now, do not even hold a candle to this movie. There is not the typical, generation X, action sequence one after the other. It is a spectacular movie about a man named Snake Plisken who is a decorated war veteran, who has lost all of his faith in society after the entire country has become a hard core police state. It takes place in 2002, which was the future in 1982 and the Whole Island of Manhattan is a prison. Snake has to go in and rescue the President in 24hrs, before the mini exploseves that were secretly logged in his arteries explode. You will LOVE this movie and if you are like me, will see it over 200 times.

Movie Review: A gem
Summary: 5 Stars

Of all of the films screaming for a DVD Special Edition, "Escape from New York" is at the top of the list. There must be 1,001 untold stories about the creation of this film...and the treatment on VHS and DVD to date has been spartan, at best.

My feeling is that this film should be reedited a bit, particularly in the beginning. I'm not a big fan of exposition, but if you watch the film, there is an odd moment. When Snake is in the glider headed for the City, he asks Hauk what to do if he finds that the president has been killed. Hauk replies "Get 'em both back". Both of what? There's a snippet of dialog missing. (Hauk is clearly speaking of the President AND the tape, but it's not clear).

If it were made by a lesser filmmaker, EFNY would be unrecoverably dated. But the film is so engaging that there is a timeless quality to it.

Call him Snake.
