Movie Reviews of Endless SkiesMovie Review: Subtle, gentle pleasure Summary: 4 Stars
I liked the subtle motion of these films. The slow, natural pace helps set a continuous, lasting ambience.
Segments 1 and 3 are identified as sunrises, but at a glance they could be sunsets just as well.
Segment 4 was shot through a special filter that cause the sun to have a starburst effect that some people may like, but personally, I prefer nature to be natural.
I don't know what "lifestyle music" is, as mentioned on the DVD case, but the accompaniment here is along the lines of the music of Steve Roach -- at times ambient with soft synthesized drones; at other times, an electronic groove. Personal tastes vary, of course -- I tend to like such music, but I'm not sure that these electronic grooves were the best choice to carry these images. So sometimes I just play the music without watching the images (and vice versa). Listened to separately, it's good "thinking music" and stimulates creativity.
As for the alternative audio track of "natural sounds," they are not natural at all, but are obviously-synthesized wind sounds with a weird pink noise pulse running underneath that seems to be coming from some sort of generator in the far distance. It doesn't work for me.
Again, I do like the subtle movement of these natural images, and I find them very tastefully photographed -- from a single, fixed point, no camera movement. Very relaxing. You'll find that they add a calming effect to any room, especially if projected via a large-screen TV or a digital projector.
If you don't like the music or sound effects, you can play your own music as you prefer on a separate device. (Mychael Danna's CD "Skys" would be VERY appropriate!)
The 4 video segments repeat after about 33 minutes.
I'd most likely buy a volume 2, were it to become available.
