Movie Reviews of Encino Man

Movie Review: Somebody, please make a movie of this.
Summary: 2 Stars

The idea is counterfactual, of course. No surprise. But such ideas are allowed, and this one is full of possibilities, both comic and dramatic. None of those possibilities were explored in this film.

Instead, this is a garden-variety teen flick. It pushes all the teen buttons. The caveman morphs into a California hip teen in less than two minutes, and that's the end of the caveman as such. The three boys do rock dancing, ride the roller coaster, do rock dancing, play arcade games, do rock dancing, roller coaster, rock dancing, arcade games, roller coaster, rock dancing, etc. ad nauseum. To top it off, the caveman is a pacifist who wouldn't hurt a flea, not even to defend himself. Yeah, right.

The social commentary, the psychological insights that could have been evoked by a clever development of this idea! The truly comic situations that the caveman could have gotten into! It's time someone made a grownup movie starting from this idea.

The people who made this film clearly didn't know what to do with this splendid idea. Or, to use a word they would likely understand, they were clueless.

Movie Review: One star for each laugh in the movie
Summary: 2 Stars

Sadly enough, if you were only comparing this movie to today's teen movie drivel it would rate five stars. Nevertheless, Pauly Shore is annoying (and looks frightenly feminine in several scenes), Sean Astin's character is so pathetic that he becomes an antagonist, and the plot drifts between non-existent and unbelievable (to the point where it interferes with your ability to enjoy the movie). Frasier is the only redeeming quality...you can tell he's having fun and it's fun to watch him in the process. Too bad his character didn't get rid of Shore and Astin when he first met them.

Movie Review: A pretty good hard rock version of 'Wild Thing' by Cheap Trick helps a decent soundtrack but the movie...
Summary: 2 Stars

...has a pretty thin plot. Ice/'Cave' Man is
thawed out by "Rudy" (Sean Astin) and (Ass)
Pauly Shore [who's (bogus)'West Coast Surfer
Rap' has grown pretty lame by now]. Brendan
Fraser is likable in this yet another attempt
at Pro-Evolutionist b.s....

Movie Review: Why this movie was allowed to see the screen, I don't know
Summary: 1 Stars

The acting was horrible, the lines were lame and the overall effect makes Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler's movies look really well written and acted.

The only reason I went when the movie opened, was because my girl scout troop had gotten free passes. Even if I like Brendan Fraiser (whose better works include School Ties and Back to the Past)I could not bear to sit through this catastrophe.

Even as it delivers an unintentional slap in the face to anti-darwinists (the caveman darwinizes to the modern world)and vindicates the school outcasts in one movie, there were far too many other holes to enjoy this movie.

The idea that parents could be that ailenated and/or oblivous to the fact that their "foregin exchange" student has manners like a savage goes beyond belief. Nobody seems to care how Link arrived at the house or the fact that he is never heard once speaking in a language that would be considered 20th century international (ie German, French, Spanish, Italian etc...)

Many years latter, I still feel really sorry for people who are expecting to get a halfway decent picture while renting this movie.

Movie Review: Another disaster from (use)Les Mayfield
Summary: 1 Stars

This stinking cesspool of dung is one of a long list of movies starring Pauly Shore. Forgive me, Dinah, but your son may be the most useless and unentertaining clods Hollywood has ever offered, and this movie showcases Pauly's terminal buffoonery. Did girls at the time think that he was "cute?" Perhaps, but as far as being a convincing actor, even in the horrible parts he has played, he has shown me nothing but a foul odor. I have also read the list of movies directed by Mr. Mayfield and, while having a fair amount of success over the years, he has failed to leave us with anything truly memorable. Most of his films are aimed at stupid teenagers and are supported by VERY shallow comedy. I wish Mr. Mayfield well and hope that someday he can find something to direct that he can be proud to be remembered by, not some Martin Lawrence crap or this awful, awful movie. This is in my top 10 WORST movies of all time.
