Movie Reviews of Encino Man

Movie Review: Liked it as a kid . . .
Summary: 3 Stars

. . . but now that I see it again, it wasn't as funny and interesting as it was years ago. The concept IS something that would certainly grab people's attention, and the performances by Sean Astin, Brendan Fraser, and (!) Pauly Shore keep it all going. The humor is kept neutral, so there's no over-the-top gags or horrible timing. However, I found it all no longer interesting. Maybe it's the early 90's rock scene, or the silly High School atmosphere. It all looks a bit outdated when seen today. I'm sure kids and teens of this generation will sadly ignore this mainly because of the early 90's fashion and music. But it isn't all that bad, "Encino Man" is still a good film, just not a very great one.

Movie Review: A real guilty pleasure
Summary: 3 Stars

I find it hard to put a movie down that gives you some real good laughs and this movie does have it's moments. It's so unfathomable in it's plot, but that's what makes it a good escapism movie. The three leads (ASTIN, SHORE AND FRASER) are all aptly cast in their roles. Fraser plays the caveman (a little too convincingly), Shore is always good as the [silly] side-kick (but man is he good at that) and Astin..well he is so [darn] cutein this movie, who cares about his acting. ;)
If you are looking for an intelligant and profound movie watching experience, don't rent/buy this. Stick to the classics. If you want 88 minutes of silliness and nonsense, you're in the right place.

Movie Review: Pleasant and entertaining, but don't look for a comedy classic here...
Summary: 3 Stars

Encino Man will never be called a classic. There is too much sophomoric humor, too close a tracking of the standard "underdog eventually wins" formula, and some poor acting in the supporting roles.

But it WAS a light and entertaining flick. I suspect it really is best suited for the 12-22 age group, particularly males. I mean, it is of the "boy loser is well intentioned but really needs assistance to steal the girl from the top jock" genre.

Don't overlook 'In The Army Now" for a more engaging comedy and a better demonstration of Pauly Shore's talents.

Movie Review: Stupid but funny.
Summary: 3 Stars

Encino Man starring Sean Astin, Pauly Shore, and Brendan Fraser is silly stupid even to this day. This is a film you can't take seriously, you will either love or loathe this playful comedy. Fraser and Astin are good actors but Shore... well he's not that talented. Encino Man is definitely a guilty pleasure, enjoy in secret.

Movie Review: SWEET AND LIKEABLE
Summary: 3 Stars

ENCINO MAN has no agenda, no political statement to make...it's a sweet and likeable film. And I'll bet there are many future PhD's who quoted liberally from this one...and can repeat verbatim the convenience store scene. Sometimes it's great to just sit back and watch one like this.
