Movie Reviews of Empire Falls

Movie Review: great story!
Summary: 4 Stars

I haven't read this novel, but having just finished watching this film on HBO, I wish I had. The all-star cast did a superb job of telling this really compelling story. I was pleased to see that Richard Russo actually wrote the screenplay, which makes me hope that it is pretty true to the novel. Regardless, this one is defintely one not to miss. HBO just doesn't make bad films. Excellent work!

Movie Review: excellent telefilm about life and people
Summary: 4 Stars

not too much to write here . rolled the bones on it after having read the back cover in one of my haunts . paid only $3.99 . worth a fair deal more . others will break it down for you . you'll likely feel this is **** or ***** star miniseries . very good adult television . if you like these people , it's the safe bet you hope it will be .

Summary: 4 Stars

I thought that the book and the movie were both good. The story is compelling, and the style is easy to read, with lots of colorful description.

Movie Review: If you love a slow plodding nowhere story. You'll love it.
Summary: 3 Stars

I have read some of the reviews on this 2 part HBO series. I had tried to watch it several times and became bored every time it was on. The story is plodding and seemingly pointless. There are many flash backs to childhood when the main character (played by Ed Harris) thinks about his mother (played by Robin Wright). She had an affair with the town's rich man, Mr. Whiting, and Harris has a half brother due to his mother's affair. Joan Woodward and Paul Newman are also in the cast. Newman plays the town drunk and not so popular father of Ed Harris. Woodward plays the the widow Mrs. Whiting, that everyone must pay homage.

The pacing is so slow at times, it seems as if several scenes are just there for filler and don't really add much to the story.

There is no payback, or big finale where Harris takes control of his life. He helps his traumatized daughter back from the edge following a school shooting by a boy the family befriended. He is just a decent man in a small town, who never seems to realize his potential

Don't waste your money buying this DVD. Just wait until HBO runs it again as double feature. Maybe with the Life of Peter Sellers. Another dud. Don't get me wrong. HBO has made many fine movies and series. This just doesn't happen to be one of them.

Don't take my word for it. Entertainment Weekly reviewed the series and said this. Adaptation of Russo's novel is wandering, overcrowded. River metaphors run thickly and unsubtly through "Empire Falls," Richard Russo's adaptation of his own lovely novel of the same name. Even more unfortunate is Harris, a fine actor who's miscast as Miles, the moral, squishy core of "Empire Falls." Despite grooming his hair to resemble a mad-clown wig, Harris remains too assured, too casually virile to play Miles, a man who never gave his wife an orgasm, who can't stand up to an old woman, who won't demand what he's owed. In the end, "Empire Falls" is pleasant enough, just a bit watered-down and murky in spots. Like a you-know-what.

Movie Review: Wanting a bit more
Summary: 3 Stars

Have not read the novel so cannot compare the movie to it. Nor did I grow up in that area so cannot relate to if that is how a town like that would be.

It is an o.k. film but left too many holes in the story and was too much of a story to tell in just those few hours. This would have been better as a several hour mini series.

Paul Newman is great

Helen Hunt does a good job but goes overboard in trying to create a "Maine accent"...it stands out as she is the only one talking that way and that makes it even more annoying.

Theresa Russell...man does she look different from 20 years ago. Did not even know it was her.

All in all a typical story about lost dreams, inner demons, future hopes, etc.

Ending is rushed and since I was slowly being drawn into their world I wanted more of this movie. Do not think it a total waste of time and a not too bad way to kill a few hours.

Gets 3 stars but could have been a 5 star if a longer mini series.
