Movie Reviews of Emperor of the North

Movie Review: NOT a Chick Flick
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with some other reviewers, this is not a movie you can sit down with your wife/girlfriend and expect her to enjoy. This movie is infused with "machismo". In fact, there are really few female actors in the movie, which takes away nothing from the excellent storytelling, cinematography, acting, etc., which makes this movie so great---IF you're a guy.

That said, this is one of those movies that you not only can watch over and over again, it actually gets better with successive viewings. There is subtle humor and innuendo in most scenes. Just watch the expressions on the actors' faces, particularly Ernest Borgnine; it's melodrama at its finest. The fight scene at the end is shocking in its brutality, but isn't gory by today's standards. It is beautifully filmed, as is every scene in this masterpiece.

I first saw this movie in the 70's on television, but it is timeless. Well-worth the price of ownership.

Movie Review: Railroad fans rejoice!
Summary: 5 Stars

This film, though not a universally classic movie, is for many fans of railroad lore a classic indeed. I won't go into exhaustive detail about the movie because if you're considering it, you probably know about it already. It's been around for many years in railroad circles and is, except for the cheesy soundtrack, a really well made story of the old hobo lifestyle with beautiful shots of some great scenery and fine acting by Borgnine, Carradine and Marvin. The reason for this review is to herald the arrival of the DVD. The VHS version has been very hard to find over the years, but now, finally, the DVD is here. If you love this movie, or love the railroads, consider getting this DVD!

Movie Review: A man's film!
Summary: 5 Stars

Epic hobo tale of two grizzled tough guys duking it out over bragging rights to the old railroad line to Seattle, set in the days of the Great Depression. Lee Marvin is the cagey hobo king, and Ernest Borgnine is the cruel and crafty train conductor, matching wits and guts to see who "owns" the train as it makes its run from Portland to Seattle. Keith Carridine plays the brash young pretender to the hobo crown. Beautiful filming, great acting, and manly action are all right on, making this a must see film.

Movie Review: Real True Grit
Summary: 5 Stars

Where was Lee Marvin on D-Day? He was storming the beach of Normandy. No 4-F flunky like John Wayne. This for real toughness comes through in all his movies but none more than Emperor of the North! He plays world class hobo and train jumper A-#1 and truely becomes the Emperor of the North. Fighting the fierce Borgnine everystep of the way always with a slight smile and fine sense of humor. A great film seen by very few people. This is a special movie, don't miss out.
