Movie Reviews of EmmaMovie Review: Matchmaking is a Messy Business - But Such Good Fun Summary: 5 Stars
Emma Woodhouse (Gwyneth Paltrow) has been raised in the best of English society, but unlike most girls her age, she took up an unusual hobby - matchmaking. She plied her trade well but unfortunately she didn't stop soon enough. When Emma sets up the new minister in town with her dear friend Harriet Smith (Toni Collete) things go awry. As Emma confusedly bumbles around, her wise friend Mr. Knightly (Jeremy Northem) watched with a concerned but loving eye. This exquisite rendering of Jane Austin's classic is full of wonderful acting and beautiful cinematography. Starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collete, Jeremy Northem, and Gret Scatchi, this film has a treasure trove of wonderful surprises awaiting the entire family.
Movie Review: Beautifully executed adaptation of the Austen classic Summary: 5 Stars
This film is now one of my favorites. Beautifully filmed in the lush English countryside, Gwenyth Paltrow shines as the lead role and Jeremy Northam is everyone's idea of a dashing gentleman in this classic romantic comedy. Ewan McGregor and Toni Collette are equally good in their roles, though seem somewhat jarringly modern. Collette also doesn't match the description of the character in the book, which slightly draws away from the plausibility of the story line. Alan Cumming puts in another fabulous performance as the slightly smarmy Mr. Elton and Sophie Thompson, sister to Emma Thompson, is fabulously funny. All in all, a highly entertaining, engaging film.
Movie Review: Emma is magical. . . Summary: 5 Stars
Janeites need to realize that making an adaptation of a novel isn't always or often successful simply by following a novel line by line. A cinematic adaptation is a re-interpretation of a novel, and the director and screenwriter must make choices for their vision to come to the screen. I have no quibbles with the choices made here. The screenplay is respectful of Austen's work, but intent on being a fast, charming, witty romantic comedy. It succeeds admirably as such. Paltrow is perfect in her role, as are the other cast members. No, it doesn't resonate as deeply and richly as the novel, but on its own terms, it is sublime.
Movie Review: Way Cool Summary: 5 Stars
I love this movie! I first saw about eight years at my cousin's. Gwyneth Paltrow plays an excellent Emma. She is elegant and sophisticated. The role seems to fit her naturally. Though I must say one of my favorite characters is the talkative, slightly dingy Miss Bates. She really makes some of the scenes. Toni Collette does a superb job on Harriet Smith. A young girl with no known family. I must also say a word to Knightley the hero of the story. I have pictures all over my room of this movie. Have the movie, and have read Emma the book a billion times. I'm a huge J.A. fan. This movie is way cool!
Movie Review: Very good movie Summary: 5 Stars
I'd like to say first that I am not an Austen fan. I generally don't like the movies made about her books, nor do I like her books. However, this movie was cute. I would assume that is because it doesn't catch the essence of Austen's works like some people say it doesn't, and since that very essence is what I don't like, I loved this movie. If you're really into Austen books, try the other version (I haven't seen it, so I can't recommend it more than that), but if you're just looking for a good, happy chick flick, this is a great one. Go Mr. Knightly! I want to know his first name...
