Movie Reviews of Emma

Movie Review: second only to Pride and Prejudice
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic Jane Austen adaptation, showing the author's romanticism as well as her great sense of humor. To tell you the story of Emma would ruin the viewing for you. If you liked Pride and Prejudice, this will become another must-have, often-viewed disc for your collection. Beware of the modern version of Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow. While a curiosity piece for Austen collectors, it is so busy being packed full of celebs that it looses the mood of the story.

Movie Review: Pitch-perfect Emma
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Kate Beckinsale as an actress (pre-Underworld!) and this is a far better adaptation than the Paltrow version, though it got overshadowed by it. Admittedly her Mr. Knightly is not as yummy as Jeremy Northam, but her performance is pitch perfect and the simmer of passion under the surface is just right. Her awakening to her own faults and her relationship with Harriet is also very well done. Another wonderful British adaptation of an English literary classic.

Movie Review: A much superior adaptation of Emma
Summary: 5 Stars

This version far surpasses the Gwyneth Paltrow version, both in actors and story. I much prefer Beckinsale to Paltrow, and very much prefer Mark Strong's more attractive, strong Mr. Knightley. Very romantic. The father is delightful as is Emma's tenderness toward him. I love Emma's fantasy scenes about the results of her matchmaking and the minister and his wife are delightfully obnoxious. A more subtle and well-acted Emma in all. Highest recommendations!

Movie Review: Simply Brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

A terrific adaptation of a wonderful novel! I can (and have) watched this many times, and have yet to be bored or to find fault with this, other than the fact that I wish they would have adapted it in a similar format to Pride and Prejudice by making it longer and exploring all the little nuances of the novel and its characters!

Significantly better than Gwenyth Paltrow's Emma, this is well worth adding to any movie collection!

Movie Review: Truly the Best Emma
Summary: 5 Stars

This Emma is the best production. The others don't compare with this one. Kate Beckinsdale is very good as the lead character and the production is much more realistic than the others out there. Emma is a difficult book to produce it is a bit thin and shallow. This is the first show I've seen that has made Emma as realistic as possible. It really works! I found myself engaged in the story and feeling for the characters. It works.
