Movie Reviews of Emma

Movie Review: Great version of Emma
Summary: 5 Stars

This version of EMMA seemed very true to the book and I liked Kate Beckinsale as Emma. Not only did she play the part well, she played it without appearing to be a total idiot. Ms. Beckinsale managed to project vulnerability and innocence that was appealing. She did not "overact" as I felt Gweneth Paltrow did in her version. Mark Strong played the part of Mr. Knightley very nicely, he was strong and passionate. Although he did not have the extreme good looks you expect in a hero, he was perhaps more relatable because of that. All in all, I really enjoyed this version.

Movie Review: The Best Adaptation of Emma...
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie, although not my favorite of Jane Austin's work, was still a wonderful movie! Compared to the other Emma adaptation, this one was more historically correct. In the one with Paltrow, some of the costumes looked very ridiculous and some of them you wouldn't wear in the regency era.

True to some posts I did feel as if Mr. Knightly was a little hard to get to know, but besides that, I thought all the actors did very well. All in all, this is the best adaptation of Emma so far!

Movie Review: good
Summary: 5 Stars

this is a better adaptation of emma than the gp hollywood film. the characters are better cast, incl emma herself, and the love story between emma and mr knightly is more in evidence. here, it's clear from the get-go that knightly admires emma. in the gp version, jeremy northam's knightly is more of a good friend than a secret admirer. the contrasts between characters also stand out more. mr knightly vs frank churchill, emma vs jane fairfax, emma vs mrs elton, mr knightly vs mr elton, and so on. a good film, even if you're not a big jane austen fan.

Movie Review: Kate Beckinsale's Emma
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Jane Austen. I've rarely seen an interpretation of her work that I didn't especially like. (Sadly the recent feature film "Pride and Prejudice" with Keira Knightley most certainly tops that list.)
As for "Emma"...while the feature film with Gwyneth Paltrow was gorgeous and as a whole well done, Beckinsale's version simply rings truer. Also a gorgeous and well done production it's a more faithful rendering of Austen's book. If you have to choose, this A&E offering is really your best bet.

Movie Review: An "Emma" Jane would have approved of
Summary: 5 Stars

The Hollywood "Emma" starring Gwyneth Paltrow was a total disaster, the director having decided Jane Austen was a "cute" writer whose novel therefore deserved a relentlessly "cute" treatment. This BBC version gets it pretty much right, especially in its presentation of an older Mr. Knightley, a choice that preserves the novel's surprise when he turns out to be the hero. Kate Beckinsale is a perfect Emma and all of the supporting characters are right for their roles.
