Movie Reviews of Emma

Movie Review: The better "Emma"
Summary: 5 Stars

As compared with the Gwyneth Paltrow version, the A&E version is by far the better "Emma". First, Kate Beckinsale was far better than Gwyneth in portraying the character. Gwyneth didn't make me believe she was an 18th century aristocratic lady, whereas Kate did. Second, the A&E version better portrayed the relationship between Mr. Knightly and Emma. Emma was much, much younger than Mr. Knightly, which was in keeping with the fashion of the day. Third, the character development was superior in the A&E version. Lastly, the A&E version was truer to the period than the one from Hollywood.

Bottom line, if you want a version of Emma that's truer to the period, go with the A&E version. If you want typical Hollywood fluff, go with either "Clueless" or the Gwyneth Paltrow version.

Movie Review: Best Emma yet!
Summary: 5 Stars

My mom, sister and I all enjoyed this version of Emma very much! I just love the romance it has to it. Other people have said Kate Beckinsale's Emma is annoying/dark/whatever but I thought she was absolutely perfect. The rest of the cast was very well chosen too, especially Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley... there was great chemistry there. My mom thought he looked too young but I don't care. :) Another big reason why I liked this version better than the Gwyneth Paltrow one was that it's more true to the book, both literally and in spirit. The GP version just seemed a little too Hollywood to me, too molded to fit the masses.
Of the three versions of Emma I've seen, this is my favorite! I'd say watch this one first, the GP version second, and don't even bother with the others, unless you're feeling very tolerant.

Movie Review: Wonderful adaptation of the book
Summary: 5 Stars

One hour and forty six minutes is not nearly enough time for this video to convey the nuances of the Jane Austen book. Too bad A&E et. al. didn't have the courage to develop it further, as they did previously with Pride and Prejudice.

That aside, however, everything contained within the 106 minutes of this video is superbly presented and wonderfully true to the book. Superior to the Gwyteth Paltrow version, in my humble opinion, which came out the same year. This film rightly understands that the book is not simply about a self-deluded matchmaker, but about a spoiled yet good hearted rich girl growing into responsibility and womanhood.

I loved every page of the book, and aside from its brevity, this movie did not disappoint as an adaptation.

Movie Review: my favorite version
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite version of the three "Emma" movies I have watched. This version portrays most of the characters the way they are portrayed in the book, and spends a lot of time on each of the different characters.
Although I very much like the version with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam also, it focused most attention on Emma Woodhouse, Mr. Knightley, and Harriet Smith only. The other characters fell a little bit into the background, in my opinion, even though their characters are so enjoyable and interesting in the book.

In this version with Kate Beckinsdale we get to know the other characters as well and it makes the movie more intriguing. A job well done!

Movie Review: Austen fans need look no further...
Summary: 5 Stars

Superior casting, direction, and production values have produced a superior film that stays true to Austen's classic novel without the excessive cloying "cutesyfying" of Gwenyth Paltrow's depiction of the title role.

I am genuinely stunned that there are reviewers here who expressed preference for the Paltrow film (which is more a parody of "Clueless" than anything else. Yes, I understand "Clueless" is a modern retelling of "Emma" but it is still different in several pertinent ways.) Beckinsale's portrayal is EXACTLY how I would expect Emma Woodhouse to look and behave if she were a living breathing person.

Thank A & E for giving us a "real" Emma.
