Movie Reviews of Elvis on Tour

Movie Review: As a life long Metaler
Summary: 5 Stars

I was born in 1971, and I got into metal and rock in my early teens. Though my primary musical love is metal, like many other Heavy Metaler lovers who know about our roots I have an appreciation for all sorts of rock. I've always had a deep abiding love for the Led Zeppelin, Beatles, etc.,. I'm also a long time Nick Drake fan. Elvis however, took more time. I've seen several different Elvis things over the years, I understood the appeal, but this film, Elvis On Tour, was the film that really made me personally interested in Elvis and his music. It is not just the songs (not all of which I actually like - I particularly didn't like the one or two religious numbers or anything too "rockabilly" sounding) but how he performed them, and the footage mixed in of things going on behind the show and elsewhere.

If I could recommend only one film on Elvis, a film that captures what Elvis was really about (not just in his early years but something that captures a sort of swan song, an ultimate statement by/on Elvis) Elvis On Tour would certainly be that film.

The atmosphere of this film is electric. One sees the hard work that Elvis put into his shows, as well as the fun. And the devotion that fans have and show in this film is very apparent. Some might think that some of this emotion from fans is quaint, or overblown, but it all was very genuine at the time and that reality is captured here. And I can relate now more than ever. As a Metaler, I agree with a vast many others that would say that the late great Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P. Ronnie, we love you) is the "man with the golden voice", or as Classic Rock Magazine called him on the cover of their recent tribute magazine to him "Metal's Greatest Singer". And Elvis On Tour shows why Elvis is the king of Rock. It was a personal blow to me when Ronnie James Dio finally succumbed to stomach cancer and passed away on May 16, 2010. Honestly, I shed tears. Something I don't normally do much of anymore for any reason. Though I saw this film before Dio's passing, I can absolutely see now how Elvis touched many people in a similar way. Some people look at the footage and might think "come on, how could they care that much!" Well, some certainly did. I never saw Elvis live. I missed him. However, on multiple occasions I did see Ronnie James Dio live with his own band (Dio) and with Black Sabbath (Heaven & Hell incarnation/years). For me, and for other people who grew up listening to Dio and listened for decades and went to live shows, the reaction to his passing has been similar. Very painful. A great loss. Emptiness. But the music of these special people lives on. Some people might not understand how this relates to Elvis, but for me it does. And someone else in the future may very well feel this same way about some other musician. I won't begrudge them that. I'd rather build bridges between music and fans than burn them. Elvis was all about building bridges in music.

Elvis On Tour captures a lot of interesting stuff about that time period in Rock. And this is Rock. It is certainly different than what Rock would become over the years, but make no mistake, this is some of the very roots of Rock N' Roll. This films captures a great deal of Elvis's personal attitude, a genuine warmth on stage and off. The man had stage presence, warmth, and persona to burn. Elvis comes across here as someone very invested into bringing music alive on stage and having fun with it as well. Like other special musicians, Elvis comes off as one of those very special people who want music to transcend the barriers, someone who tries to make it elevate everyone to a better place. Among other things, Elvis on Tour captures this feeling. It really captures a very special moment in time.

This particular Elvis film is significant. It is everything wrapped up in one package in a way that even a casual fan can and does get pulled in. It never comes off as boring. It is rare when someone comes along that affects a certain community so deeply that it goes beyond entertainment and becomes something far more personal. These special people who's music and lives have made our own that much better.

For many people, Elvis was the first of these deep personal relationships. The first to come and the first to leave us.

I think, at least for me, Elvis On Tour captures the pinnacle of what Elvis was all about.

P.s., I've read some of the things here about the powers that be removing "Johnny B. Goode" from the opening credits and replacing it with a live version of "Don't Be Cruel." This, and whatever other edits or whatnot that there may be with the dvd release are completely uncalled for. I think that all films should be released the way they were originally released, the way the director intended them to be released, and then if you want to include some other extra version with some minor edits or whatever, fine. I know that if they did something like this to one of the Ronnie James Dio dvd's out there or Iron Maiden dvd's I'd be outraged! So I can sympathize. But lets try to put this in a little bit of a positive context. This Elvis film is a concert film/documentary. It is not a true 100% live concert. Though the songs that are played are pretty much played all the way through (if memory serves correct), they do however flip back and forth between the songs to footage, etc. If you want a true live Elvis concert, there are some fine live concerts cd's of Elvis out there. I think ultimately, though their tweaking garbage is uncalled for, people should realize that the weight of this film is such that it is not going to really ruin your experience. Especially if you are not a dedicated Elvis fanatic. If you are hardcore about Elvis, you probably can find a copy of the old version on vhs somewhere and transfer it or whatever if you must have it exactly the same as released (I can truly appreciate that). But it sounds like whatever changes that may have happened are few, and the average person will not think twice about this. You are still in for one incredible experience and I would not let a few minor things get in the way of what is in store for you here with Elvis On Tour. NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT THE ROTTEN POWERS THAT BE MIGHT MAKE IT SOMETIMES!
