Movie Reviews of Elton John: Tantrums and TiarasMovie Review: "I'm still standing" Summary: 5 Stars
"Elton John: Tantrums and Tiaras" is a fascinating documentary about the UK's own diva, from the perspective of his husband, David Furnish. It's affectionately done, and it shows a personal side to the immensely talented piano man. The documentary deftly interweaves Elton's commentary on his life with concert footage. It chronicles 1995, starting with his single "Believe" (filming the music video prompts a tantrum) and ends with him winning an Oscar for his "Do you feel the love tonight?" from The Lion King (Disney Special Platinum Edition)
Elton John is a complicated man. His relationship with his father was troubled--while he enjoys good relationships with his mother and his late grandmother. He's perpetually boyish, yet also quite the queen. He doesn't have the stereotypical lisp. He doesn't come across as effeminate (unless he's in the mood to be so) He cusses a lot, but he's also an amazing artist. He throws a fit when a woman dares to call out "yoo hoo",but he's compassionate towards AIDS sufferers. He's temperamental and talented. Elton wanted this documentary to show him with "warts and all." He accepts his imperfections. He's humble, saying he's no Madonna or George Michael. No longer drowning his insecurities in drugs, Elton has found refuge in David and in his art.
"Tantrums and Tiaras" is one of the best rock documentaries around. Long live the diva!
