Movie Reviews of Elfen Lied: Diclonius Report Complete Collection

Movie Review: Phenomenal
Summary: 5 Stars

Phenomenal. That's basically my gut reaction after having watched this whole series in nearly one sitting. Now, I must come clean, I am by no means an Anime connoisseur. I've seen a few movies here and there, but I would never claim to be an authority on this subject. I do know people tend to get real touchy in this genre if you possibly "misinterpret" something, but that's in any field of interest that musters die hard fans! All I'm saying is don't give me a lot of unnecessary crap simply because I haven't seen a thousand Animes, like I see some people get attacked from their reviews. If you disagree, comment and we can talk about it, I am eager to learn for this has piqued my interest in the genre.

That being said, this came my way because my girlfriend showed me a couple clips from the first episode she found online, so we decided to buy it. I was intrigued and since this point I'm making an honest effort to come across some other good story lines in this genre. Maybe this won't be the best when my search goes deeper, but I have to admit that compared to the other Animes I've seen, this one was incredibly good. I think this appeal's to me on a philosophical level because it certainly deals with the concept of extremism. If you read my other reviews you'll see I've read a good deal of work from the Marquis de Sade, and there is none more extreme or brutal in philosophy than his works. Were Elfen Lied's writers simply trying to appeal to extremist fetishism or was there a deeper undertone to this series? Honestly, I can't be sure, because like other reviewers have said they seem to try to include all character content possible in this.

Basically this series opens with something I wasn't expecting in the least. A naked girl with a steel helmet is walking through a government facility slaughtering people with nothing but a thought! Horror and gore aside, I'm curious and intrigued because I simply need to know what the point of all this is. From there I was brought on a ride to the realm of the bizarre and interesting. At the end of the first episode we finally see the face of this horrifying assailant and she's not a hideous monster, but she does have "horns", called a Diclonius. Actually they look a lot like cat ears and the "fur" interest seems to be coming out in some small aspect of this, so the theory that this is trying to appeal to a great deal of "special interest" people all at once seems to have some merit. Whatever, I liked it despite some of the clich? points.

I don't want to give too much away because I think the overall ride speaks for itself and I want people to enjoy it for themselves. There are elements of the overtly cutesy characters, but that is split with a horrifying killer. The series is interesting because despite the killing streak many of these Diclonius have; you sympathize with the torments they were put through. The mental reasoning for their actions is all explained and you learn why the main characters Kouta and Lucy have a history together. It really is a psychological tragedy when you really sit down and think about this series. It's not just a statement about how you can overcome tragedy in some cases, but how cruel the world can be and the cause and effect relationship of that cruelty. There's an underlying theme that humanity has gone to the brink and the only next step is evolution, that evolution is Diclonius, with their horns and kinetic powers. Unfortunately it doesn't seem the two can coexist without fighting, thanks to the fact that most humans are terrified of them and the all too human reaction of kill what you don't understand or fear is prevalent.

Message aside, I thought it was a good story. I did want to know what eventually happened to the director and young girl who assisted the director's son. Unfortunately we never really find out what happens to them. I think it's sort of implied, but I didn't get it, a failing on my part, sorry if it was obvious to some. Other than that I really don't have any complaints about this. The art is on par from what I would expect from an Anime. The story is phenomenal, but certainly not for the faint of heart. I was surprised at the decent amount of "Lolita" nudity, but I guess that plays into the other point. However, a majority of this nudity really isn't designed around an erotic piece, which I found interesting. Yes, maybe some people find it to be, but the way it's used just doesn't have that feel to me. If that was the point of it all, then these authors are really crazy. However, I like to think there was more of a point than just that.

I would definitely recommend this to people who are intrigued by such notions and want a complete story to really back it up. The characters and psychology behind their actions is well thought out, but you have to remember that this is really about extremes so what you and I may consider to be a small thing is not so small to these people. I think having that in mind and if you're not offended by gratuitous gore and nudity then this series has real merit for you. Again, I won't pretend to be an authority on this genre, but I can't deny the fact that I found this a really enjoyable series and it did really inspire the philosopher in me to think outside the box a little more than I already did. Take it or leave it, it has my seal of approval.
