Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)

Movie Review: Best Christmas movie in a looong time
Summary: 5 Stars

Elf is an excellent movie for people of all ages. It has some great throwbacks and references to the Christmas classics we all grew up loving... Rudolf, Frosty, etc. The one star reviews suggest the movie is stupid, I say it's playful. Although this is not the Ferrell you may know from Zoolander, Old School, etc., he totally delivers and lets his fun and sweet side shine. Elf has everything that one wants in a Christmas classic - heartwarming story, lovable characters, little bit of singing to bring on the spirit, snow, and (duh!) SANTA! Not since The Santa Clause (1994) has Hollywood delivered such an automatic holiday classic. The best thing about this movie is that it's funny enough to watch with your lover and/or friends (and a few drinks) or cuddled up on a winter night with your kids. Also, for film buffies out there, the art direction is wonderful and presents very clear themes (plus keep your eye out for a Peter Billingsly uncredited cameo!). All over this movie is just worth it!

Movie Review: A movie with the Christmas Spirit
Summary: 5 Stars

Elf is a great holiday film driven by an inspired and truly enthusiastic performance by Will Ferrell. Elf is also family friendly as it doesn't sink down to toilet humor (at least not often). I find it refreshing to see a comedy derive laughs by being witty or at least wacky instead of how many fart or sex jokes one can cram in a movie. The writers and directors stay committed to the character of Buddy the Elf and never lets the story drift away from Buddy's world. The movie also has strong and convincing performances from all the supporting actors which definitely adds an air of gravity to the over the top zealousness that Will Ferrell brings to the screen.

I can say with confidence that Elf will be an annual holiday watch. It may not be as deep in message as some of the Christmas movie legends like A Christmas Carol but it contains that one attribute that all Christmas movie greats share, a true belief in the Christmas Spirit.

Movie Review: Freaking hilarious family flick
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't get the image of him eating the gum off the subway stairwell out of my head.

What is sure to become a Christmas classic for years to come, Elf is funny in the vein of films like Tommy Boy and Groundhog Day - although without the sexual innuendo that is so prevalent in most films these days. This is a great family film that my 4 year old loves just as much as I do.

I'm always wary of films from Saturday Night Live cast members - its really been hit and miss with them. But this film is both well written and well performed. The story is simple enough: boy raised by Santa's elves, decides to search for his real family, falls in love, and saves Christmas when Santa's sleigh breaks down in Central Park, NY. Ferrell and Caan are a great matchup as father/son, and Bob Newhart is great as Papa elf.

And then there's that subway gum scene...

Movie Review: Hysterical and full of Christmas cheer!
Summary: 5 Stars

Will Farrel is wonderful as the loveable elf- I mean human- named Buddy- who was RASIED by elves. He's naive and loving and kind and thinks that everyone believes in santa and elves- much to the dismay of his father, who he's sought out to be reunited with. The movie is witty and smart- and even just plain ridiculous at times- like when Buddy eats cotton balls at the doctors office, or freaks out when he hears Santa is coming to a department store. What's even more lovable about this movie is the lesson it teaches as Buddy teaches his father the importance of family over his work. It's cute and funny (love the claymation Burl Ives Esque Snowman in the northpole!), and enjoyable for everyone. Pick it up- you won't be disappointed with this one, it's got just enough story to keep one interested without becoming dull as it goes on.

Movie Review: A Will Ferrel Christmas
Summary: 5 Stars

This is yet another film that you can watch during this time of year. Despite it being far from perfect, it's a hilarious comedy, and I had a great time watching it. It has so many gags that work, and it has Will Ferrel as an elf (well, a human who was raised by elves)! If that doesn't seem funny to you, then I'd be fresh out of ideas. Ferrell gives a surprisingly excellent performance here, and the supporting cast is brilliant. James Caan, Bob Newhart, and Zooey Deschanel really have something here. But I think the greatest thing about this film is that it's one of those that gives you a very warm feeling about the holidays. It's about family, friendship, and most importantly, love. In short, Elf is a funny Christmas film. It may not be as memorable as It's a Wonderful Life or Home Alone, but it's still very entertaining.
