Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)

Movie Review: Just what you need to get in the holiday mood
Summary: 5 Stars

Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, a human child who mistakenly slips into Santa's bag one year and is taken back to the north pole. Raised by one of the older elves, Buddy has no idea that he is actually human until he overhears some of the other elves talking in reference to his decreased productivity at toy-making when compared to the other elves (he builds 85 Etch-a-Sketches an hour while the genuine elves can build a thousand). Buddy decides to go back to his roots and find his human relatives, but is distraught when he's told that his real father is on Santa's naughty list. Still, he sails off on an iceberg from the North Pole bound for New York City.

Elf is hilarious as only Will Ferrell movies can be. When Buddy finds a department store Santa Clause pretending to be the real deal he tells him, "You sit on a throne of lies." This movie is full of great one liners and watching it is a great way to get in the mood for the holiday season. I'd highly recommend it as a funnier alternative to some of the old classics like Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story, or simply to supplement your holiday movie library.

Movie Review: Best New Christmas Movie in Years
Summary: 5 Stars

Wil Farrell is funniest when he is playing a clueless innocent, and no one is more innocent or clueless than "Buddy," a human raised by elves at the North Pole. A tremendous supporting cast, including Bob Newhart, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, and Ed Asner, bring vitality and a sort of quirky plausibility to a movie that seems to start out in "Rudolf-land" and ends up with a cop-on-horseback-versus-reindeer chase scene in Central Park. Peter Dinklage (Prince Caspian's Trumpkin) has a bit as a children's author with an attitude that is almost worth the price of admission.
With the exception of Buddy's father choosing one of the few bad judgments that virtually never takes place in that industry (distributing a children's book with the last plot page missing), everything else that happens in the movie seems to flow right out of the characters and from the conflict between Buddy's inherent good nature and naivete and the "real-world's" jaded cynicism. This is a remarkable movie, and will no doubt tie with Stranger Than Fiction as Farrell's most enduring work.

Movie Review: The Most Playful Christmas Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm one of those people who loves all of the real Christmas classics: It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman...I pretty well find a way to watch them every year.

For some reason, though, I've never been so drawn to many of the more recent Christmas movies and specials. I've enjoyed some of them (especially Christmas Vacation and Bad Santa), but for the most part, they're silly and too light to spark that yearning to see them over and over. So, I've never adopted any of them into my annual viewing habit.

Until Elf. It manages to play with and make fun of many of our zany and schmaltzy Christmas tropes, all the while indulging in them. As a result, it seems fresh every year (especially by comparison with whatever recent Christmas specials have just appeared) and is always fun, and it captures something of the holiday spirit better than all of those other films. We live in a silly time, and this is our era's silly but endearing contribution to the Christmas canon.

Movie Review: A new holiday classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a suprisingly funny tale of Buddy, a human baby that accidently got into santa's bag at the orphanage, and ended up at the north pole. Santa had a softspot for babies, so Buddy (named after his diaper brand) was given to an Elf (bob newhart) to raise. Well, as buddy grew up, he was noticably different. After a series of disasterous attempted jobs at the north pole, the secret leaked out that buddy was a human. So papa elf share with buddy the secret of his origin. It was at that point Buddy decided to go on a mission in search of his human father (mother unfortunately passed away), played by james caan. We then follow Buddy to new york city at christmas time, in search of his day. Well from here, the story takes of, the adaptation of an Elf in the human world, let alone at christmas time. Let's just say he was suprised at "SANTA" when he showed up at the department store. The movie is funny, and fresh, with moments of drama and sadness, but overall wrapped in a happy, funny story that ends well for all. A great holiday movie, check it out.

Movie Review: Move over Christmas Story....
Summary: 5 Stars

This just might be my new favorite Christmas movie.
A tie at the very least.

I should mention that I NEVER spend money to go to a theater and watch this type of comedy ... but I did - and I AM SO GLAD!

Also, you should know that I am pretty picky and it takes a lot to get a thumbs up from me. The movie wasn't even over when I leaned over and whispered to my friend that I need to get Elf on DVD as soon as it comes out.

I laughed and laughed and laughed...

I still laugh remembering my favorite scenes. I kept breaking out in random giggles at work the day after I saw it. People thought I'd lost it - but they had all seen the movie so all I had to do was tell them what scene I was recalling and they started laughing rignt along with me.

Smart comedy, a wonderfully written story, great acting and all of the happiness this season should hold - all wrapped up in one wonderful Christmas package. Go see it - bring your friends, your family or just some candy canes and syrup...
you'll be glad you did.

It's sweet AND good for you!
