Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)Movie Review: Wonderful Holiday Movie!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This film, released in 2003, is a wonderful holiday picture. Will Ferrell stars as Buddy the Elf, who crawls into Santa Claus' (Ed Asner) bag at an orphanage and winds up at the North Pole where he is adopted by Papa Elf (played by Bob Newhart). It is soon realized that Buddy is not a true elf, but a human raised by elves. After finding out his true parentage, a Walter Hobbs (played by James Caan) he journeys to New York City to meet and reconcile with his biological father. With his innocent nature he has several misadventures, more particularly at Gimbel's, where he is mistaken for an elf worker and put to work at the "North Pole" and meets a worker named Jovie (played by Zooey Deschanel) who he is enchanted by and falls in love with. He then goes to his father's apartment, meeting his half-mother (Mary Steenburgen) and his half-brother. He stays there until he is taken to work by Walter, where he gets drunk for the first time. He then has many adventures along the way, including running away from home until he meets Santa who has crash-landed in Central Park. I will not give away too much more, but it is a satisfying conclusion, including a spoof of a well-known cryptozoological piece of footage. I give Elf 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Movie Review: funny holiday flick Summary: 5 Stars
Will Farrel portrays Buddy, the elf, who has come to NYC to find his long lost human father. Buddy accidentally crawled into Santa's bag when he was a baby and grew up at the North Pole making toys when he overheard that he was a human. In the course of the story Buddy finds out who his father is and tries to bond with him. Buddy's father, played brilliantly by James Caan is a serious workaholic who is neglectful of his family, and wants no relationship with Buddy. Yet with Buddy's charm and hilarious ways he warms up to his father and new family.
Will Farrell makes this movie so funny from his facial gestures, stunts, and speeches. The best parts is his assimilation in NYC and his job at Gimbels Department Store where he falls in love with a clerk and faces a "fraudulant" Santa Clause. Other wonderful actors include Bob Newhart as Buddy's adopted elf father and Mary Steenburgen as Buddy's new stepmom.
Besides being wonderful for its good bits of humor, and fine cast, the movie has some wonderful graphics as many of the creatures from the North Pole were derived from the old 1950s Christmas classics. This movie is wonderful for children and adults to watch together.
Movie Review: Very Funny, puts you in the holiday spirit! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out and i was not very impressed, but because i am a will ferrell fan i bought it on dvd when it came out. I enjoyed it so much more when i watched it on dvd alone, instead of in the theaters. The movie put me back into the holiday spirit, even though the holidays were over about a month ago and what arrive again for a long time. It is a classic Will Ferrell comedy, because they give him so many chances to improvise. The movie has a great story about a misfit Elf in the big city, reminded me a lot of 'Jungle 2 Jungle' with Tim Allen. The Infinifilm features are amazing. You can watch the movie, and then little popups on the bottom will give you the choice to "see how Will Ferrell shot this scene" or "See Will's Double shooting this scene", etc. I learned many things about camera movements and special features such as how Buddy seems so BIG in the workshop while all the elves are making toys, and then how the elves seem so small when Buddy is at his home with papa elf. Pretty amazing stuff on a lot of different camera perspectives. The movie is great for the whole family, and the DVD features are great. highly recommended!
Movie Review: Make a Buddy for the holidays! Summary: 5 Stars
Being a former cast member of Saturday Night Live doesn't guarantee a comedian a real chance of movie stardom. For every Mike Myers, there is a Jimmy Fallon (attn: Mr. Fallon---big mistake leaving SNL). Fortunately Will Farrell is not one of those guys that will fall to the wayside. He proves this with "Elf", a charming Christmas tale perfectly suited for him.
In this story a young baby accidently ends up in Santa's bag of toys and is taken back to the north pole. The child is raised by one of the lead Elves (played by the wonderful Bob Newhart) until Buddy (Farrell) realizes he must find his real father.
The journey takes Buddy to New York where his work driven father (James Caan) finds out he has an adult soon and is, of course, convinced that his son, who believes he is an elf, is a complete nut case. Will Farrell's innocent portrayal of Buddy is perfect and he makes the character lovable. I hope this film finds its way into the list of Christmas classics that we see on TV every December during the holiday season. It certainly deserves to be. I recommend this film for all---a funny movie to enjoy with family or friends.
Movie Review: Will Ferrell "elfs himself" to a new Holiday classic Summary: 5 Stars
Who would've thought that Will Ferrell, Saturday Night Live alumni, would be the one to create a new Christmas classic? Thanks to the wide-eyed silliness of Ferrell, the deftly smart direction of Jon Favreau, and a cleverly funny & heartfelt script, "Elf" turns out to be a real delight. In a decade awash with disappointing Holiday films, this one truly earns the title of "brand new Holiday classic".
And the whole cast is good: James Caan as Buddy the Elf's gruff, cynical father who's lost touch with his true spirit; Mary Steenburgen gives solid support as Caan's wife; Bob Newhart lends his dour, low-key presence as Head Elf; Zooey Deschanel as Buddy's love interest, a rather cynical & untrusting department store worker; and Ed Asner as a sort of world-weary Santa. But ultimately, this is Ferrell's movie all the way, as his sweetly innocent but comical Buddy navigates his way through the gritty jungle of New York City, and eventually succeeds in re-connecting the town with its lost Holiday spirit.
Both an engaging tale & a charming satire of Christmas movies, "Elf" is definitely one of my favorites to watch around Christmastime!
