Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)Movie Review: A Christmas classic Summary: 5 Stars
I see a fair number of movies, but it is only rarely that I leave the theatre feeling I truly got my nine dollars' worth. The last six months have been exceptional for me in that there have been three films which have been more than worth my time and money. The first was "Lost in Translation"; the third was "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"; and the one in the middle was none other than "Elf"!Oh yes, I kid you not. I am usually not the biggest fan of Christmas movies, but "Elf" kept me smiling for two straight hours. This is no small achievement, especially during the holiday season. James Caan is perfectly cast as Will Ferrell's father, and I was really impressed with Ferrell himself. I always thought he was funny on "Saturday Night Live," but this really is classic stuff. There is no danger of him going the way of Rob Schneider or David Spade, "Old School" notwithstanding. Throw Bob Newhart into the mix and how can you lose? Roger Ebert said it best: "I thought it would be clunky, stupid and obvious...foisting upon us a chaste romance involving the only girl in America who doesn't know that a man who thinks he is an elf is by definition a pervert.... It took me about 10 seconds of seeing Will Ferrell in the elf costume to realize how very wrong I was.... He convinced me that this was a good movie, and that's a miracle on 34th Street right there."
Movie Review: Will Ferrell rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
Back in the day when Will Ferrell was on SNL, he used to impersonate George W. Bush. Except Will's GWB was more likable than the real thing. Ferrell's naturally sunny, innocent demeanor made "George" hard to dislike: he lacked the real-life president's sneer, smirk, quick temper, and arrogance.
"Elf" is really a sort of cheesy Christmas movie, but with Will Ferrell's irrepressible, sunny personality, it becomes genuinely sweet and funny. Buddy (Will Ferrell) is a human who is raised by elves. He knows he's out of place among the tiny North Pole workers (they call him a "special" elf), and Buddy heads to NYC to find his real father (James Caan). It's a classic fish-out-of-water movie, and the story is predictable. Buddy brings Christmas cheer to his workaholic father and also falls in love with a Macy's salesclerk (Zooey Deschanel).
The movie is more sweet than laugh out loud funny, although it has some good lines. Buddy describes his journey thus: "I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel." It's family friendly, and although the ending (with the "Christmas cheer thermometer") veers towards the drippy, it's a treat to see Will Ferrell's unique brand of sunny, bubbly comedy.
Movie Review: Better than A Christmas Story... Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a big fan of Christmas movies. In fact, there are only two that I'll watch every year/every other year - A Christmas Story and The Santa Clause. That is, until I saw ELF in theatres last year. I have to say, this is the best Christmas movie I have ever seen - ELF is a fresh idea filled with great jokes that can be enjoyed by adults, teenagers, and kids.
ELF is a great Christmas movie - Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) is a bit...different than the rest of the elves in the North Pole. He's six-some feet tall, can't make toys all that fast, etc. One day, he finds out the awful truth - he's not really an elf. He's a human.
Buddy goes on a quest to find his real family, and of course, he gets into tons of trouble on the way. This is where the real magic of ELF comes about. Will Ferrell is absolutely charming as Buddy, and I don't know how you could not fall in love with his sweet (but oh so naive) character. As I've said before, the jokes/one-liners are amazingly funny.
ELF is my favorite Christmas movie, and the jokes are always funny. Its cute, charming, and quick-witted. Of course, the end is a bit (okay, really, really) unbelieveable, but thats expected with a Christmas movie. Highly recommended
Overall grade - A+
Movie Review: Another ACE for Jon Favreau Summary: 5 Stars
Just an amazing Christmas film that drives itself headlong to the top of the yuletide classics heap.
I noticed some reviewers had given it 1 star. I don't typically analyze one's character based on personal tastes in films. However, I really have to question the integrity of the reviewer when they blaze onto this site screaming "It sucked!", "It sucked!" I mean, how can you not like this holiday film? The very idea of giving 'Elf' 1 star suggests that the reviewer is a frigid, empty suit, or was home-schooled by conservative Christian parents who taught that laughter was a sin against God. Some of you need to put down the corporate nooses and learn to be silly again; learn to be a kid again.
This movie is silly, and sappy, and so much damn fun I don't understand how anyone could turn away disappointed. It's akin to hating "Rudolph the red nosed reindeer", or "The Santa Clause", or "A Christmas Story". Perhaps it has less to do with 'Elf' and more to do with a sheer distaste for Christmas. All I know is I'm baffled by it.
Go buy this film. Watch it alone, or with loved ones. It's a treasure of a holiday film and enjoyed by just about everyone. Given the ratio of good/bad reviews on this site, it's safe to say that 'Elf' delivers.
Movie Review: Elf insanely funny!! Summary: 5 Stars
Will Ferrell makes yet another memorable splash on the big screen in Jon Favreau's sweet and hilarious Christmas fable. Ferrell is Buddy, an innocent figure who was raised as an elf in the North Pole by his adoptive father, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart). When Buddy discovers that he's actually a human being, he heads to New York City to reunite with his biological father. The trouble is that his dad, Walter (James Caan), is a publishing executive who doesn't have time for anything other than work. Buddy moves in with Walter and his family, and proceeds to teach them a lesson or two about what being a family really means. Meanwhile, he also falls head over heels in love with the incredibly cute department store clerk, Jovie (Zooey Deschanel). By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, the general lack of spirit in the air threatens to ground Santa for the big night. He must rely on Buddy's expertise and overall enthusiasm to ensure that Christmas will be saved once again. Favreau's film is family entertainment at its finest, featuring a performance by Ferrell that is at once innocent, tender, and laugh-out-loud funny. A stellar supporting cast--including Caan, Deschanel, Newhart, and Faizon Love--adds to the film's already overabundant charm.
