Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)

Movie Review: Elf is sugary sweet without the cavities
Summary: 5 Stars

Will Ferrell continues to show a comic prowess that I love in the movie Elf. He plays Buddy, a human that as an orphaned baby snuck into Santa's bag one Christmas Eve. Santa, played by Ed Asner, doesn't discover the child until he gets back to the North Pole.

At that point, he designates one of his senior elves, played by Bob Newhart, to raise the youngster as his own. Even though Buddy is over six feet tall, he is unaware of the fact that he is not an elf. Unfortunately, he is not able to produce toys like the others, and that eventually leads to him finding out about his human roots.

When he is told the story of his past, Buddy decides that he wants to meet the man who is unaware of Buddy's existence. Buddy's mother passed away, and she never told Buddy's father that the baby existed. So armed with an old snapshot of his parents and a snow globe of New York, Buddy leaves the North Pole to spend Christmas with his human family.

It's difficult to imagine anyone else pulling off the role of Buddy. The closest I can think of might be Tom Hanks' performance in Big. Buddy is definitely a man-child, but Ferrell plays it straight and does not seem to try overdoing it.

This is a sweet film that offers a lot of the elements found in other family Christmas films, including Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, and A Christmas Story. Even if the ending is not really a surprise, it is certainly a pleasant gift. Elf is a movie that should be watched and shared with family.

Movie Review: Elf 2003
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never been drawn to see a Will Ferrell movie. I find his humor sophomoric and mildly entertaining with the exception of a few characters on SNL. With that being said, I have to say from the moment I saw the trailer I've been itching to see it. Since I'm not a big movie goer I waited for the DVD. I figured that this is one that I would like to see for the first time at home with the kids around me, the lights out, the Christmas decorations blazing and eating goodies. My patience paid off...I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! I can't think of a better way to watch it.

This movie has such heart. Baby boomers will appreciate the late 50's early 60's Rudolf era feel in the music and even in the beginning credits. I didn't know that Will Ferrell had it in him to actually TAKE the viewer on a journey so you can genuinely feel his character's excitement
(ie SANTA!!!! "OOOOHH, MMMYYYY GOD!!!!......I know him, I know him.") His wild-eyed innocence reminds me of Tom Hank's performance in Big. (They say that comedians make the best actors because of their acting range) His acting was wonderful and see if you can go 5 minutes between laughs from beginning to end. Between the "Attack of the Dwarf" and Buddy trying to put the star on the tree, I almost lost my mind laughing. This is a must see!!!

Remember anyone expecting to see a "Will Ferrell Movie" might be dissappointed. Just think like a child and watch the movie through those eyes. With that in mind you'll like it as much as I do!!!

Movie Review: One of the best comedies of the year!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hats off to the writer, director, and actors who put this great movie together. Will Ferrell played the role of Buddy the Elf to perfection. By the end of the movie, I was convinced Ferrell could actually be an ELF! Okay, maybe that's a bit over the top, but he did do a great job.

This movie is good from so many angles. The set designs were great. The plot has enough side-stories going on that the movie is very multi-dimensional, a great achievement for any Christmas story.

I can't think of a Christmas movie I enjoyed more than this one.

James Caan is fantastic as Buddy's biological father. It was so cool to see James Caan playing a role like this. He truly is a GREAT actor! I have always enjoyed watching him on the screen.

Bob Newhart performed brilliantly as Papa Elf, Buddy's adopting father. He added charm and sophisticated presence to this film.

Edward Asner (even with all of his LEFT-wing views) is great as Santa. He is a gifted actor! Great job Ed! I may not agree with your politics, but I do enjoy your acting.

Zooey Deschanel did a magnificent job as Buddy's love interest. I can't picture anyone playing this role any better.

Buy this DVD! It is GREAT entertainment for the whole family!

See ya next review!

Movie Review: A New Christmas Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Not being a real fan of Saturday Night Live since the days of John Belushi and Bill Murray, my only exposure to Will Farrell came with the movie Old School. And while Farrell was the best part of the film, it wasn't like I would rush right out and see a movie with him as the star...So I missed Elf last year and finally saw it on DVD last night. This is a great holiday movie, and Will Farrell is hilarious. The story of Buddy adjusting to human life after being raised at the North Pole is enchanting, and Farrell's wide-eyed innocence gives you a chuckle as he wanders the streets of New York dressed in his elf attire. This really is a great family movie, kids will love to see Santa and the North Pole, and Buddy's antics will have them laughing as well. But this is not a "Kids" movie in the way that "Santa Clause" is. The jokes also target an older demographic that will have adults laughing too. This is the perfect time of the year to watch Elf, the holidays are right around the corner, and you can't help but catch a little of the Christmas Spirit after watching Elf. Also, any movie that features Bob Newhart's dry humor is worth your viewing. Newhart's Poppa Elf character just had me chuckling whenever he appeared on screen, not since Jack Benny has a comedian been able to express so much by doing so little. Great cast, great writing, great holiday sentiment....you can't ask for more than that.

Movie Review: Outta Sight -- Outta Mind and from the Other World!
Summary: 5 Stars

If one did not believe in Santa Claus, after watching this movie and realness of Acting and beauty of Scenery then he needs to have his or her head examined! We watched a few nites earlier the Cole Porter extravaganza "De'Lovely"! Then another effort to get into the "GARDEN STATE" of New Jersey with its drugs and Sex but not sexuality, for 8-9 minutes! Then we switched to the true Christas Spirit with Santa played by Ed Asner, the big ELF by Will Ferrell, his troubled Father by James Caan and human-lovely Mother by Mary Steenburgen.

After easing out of Santa's Bag back-home in ToyLand, the little guy not much bigger than our new Great-grandson, Roger Sidney IV was on the way to becoming a new Son of Good-Old Bob Newhart! Our 2003 ELF blossomed into Leader/Fixer of Santa's Snow Mobile and Chief Cheerleader with all of Santa's Elves!

Altho Christmas was already over, we swiftly moved to the Joyous Peace, Fun Excitement of Christmas, watching Will in an Elf/Suit nearly single handedly, save the Christmas Journey for Santa and his Raindeer into the City of the Big Apple. Great Fun for James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner, the Real-life Santa!

We soon slipped into that natural wonderment in remembering all The Historic Christmas antics of our mischievous grandchildren!
