Movie Reviews of Elf (Infinifilm Edition)Movie Review: A Christmas Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie, "Elf", is already a Christmas Classic.
This is the perfect "feel good" Holiday special to enjoy with your family, during Christmas, AND anytime of year!
Will Ferrell is hilarious as "Buddy", a human Christmas Elf.
This movie has alot in common with the classic Christmas Special, "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer".
"Buddy", like "Rudolph", is considered a "Misfit" and doesnt know where he fits in, and like "Rudolph", "Buddy" ends up saving the day and saving Christmas too!
Also, "Leon" The Snowman, will remind you of the famous "Sam" The Snowman character from "Rudolph".
And the beautiful backgrounds in some scenes appear to have been inspired by the "Rudolph" special too.
With the wonderful acting of Mary Steenburgen and James Caan, combined with a great Santa Claus portrayed by Ed Asner, and a Elf-like Bob Newhart, this movie is a real Christmas treat!
The woman in this film, who plays "Jovie", Zooey Deschanel, plays the role of the cute woman who steals "Buddy's" Heart.
And "Buddy" will steal YOUR heart and fill it with Christmas Spirit in this truly Magical, funny, very watchable movie.
When I have been depressed, I watch this movie and it makes me feel better.
And how many movies can do that?
"Elf' is in my view one of the best Christmas Classics of all time.
It has the Christmas Spirit, and you cant help but also get into the Christmas mood when watching this movie.
Watch it in December, watch it in June.
Watch it whenever you want to smile, and whenever you want to feel the Christmas Spirit!
Movie Review: Sing loud for all to hear Summary: 5 Stars
Elf will probably find a niche in our perennial holiday viewing due to its well calculated story that borrows liberally from the Bass/Rankin classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Edward Scissorhands (including the score) and even the sacred The Miracle of 34th Street. Director Jon Favreau does a masterful job of keeping a big story small with perfect pacing. He's made a story entertaining for all ages and one that's sweet but not so sweet as to put you into a diabetic coma.
It's not played for big laughs but rather to bring out the humanity of the story. Will Ferrell is excellent as Buddy and the rest of the cast does a fine job in support. It's nice to see a lot of truly gifted comic actors like Amy Sedaris and Andy Richter and Artie Lange and the legendary Bob Newhart (who has always been 10 times as funny on the big screen than the small one) being used. I'd sure like to see these folks and others like them become a staple of movie casting calls, large and small.
I've got to mention the FX are excellent but the story never takes a back seat to them. That's a very nice accomplishment. There's also almost nothing objectionable about it but remains entertaining (my hat's off). The laughs are earned.
In the end, Elf will find its place right next to The Christmas Story and 34th St and Christmas in Connecticut and Rudolph and Ernest Saves Christmas as part of our Xmas must viewing and I'm sure it's going to be one of the biggest socking stuffers this year and maybe for years to come.
So sing loud for all to hear
And let Will and Elf spread that Christmas Cheer
Movie Review: "MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME" Summary: 5 Stars
"Elf" grows more charming and endearing (and hopefully also enduring) every year. This film quickly replaced "Miracle On 34th Street" as my favorite Christmas movie of all time. Will Ferrell's adolescent screen persona, so annoying in every other movie of his, is perfectly suited to the role of Buddy, an innocent 30 year old "elf-child" trapped in a man's body. The movie works, in large part, because Ferrell remains completely sincere, and his Christmas cheer is genuinely infectious. When a shocked Buddy learns he is actually a human who has been raised by Elves, he sets out on a mission to find his biological father. In the process, he also brings some old-fashioned North Pole magic to a world-weary New York City.
Director Jon Favreau deftly keeps the movie balanced and grounded, never allowing it to wallow in too much candy-cane sweetness. The supporting cast, featuring a perfectly exasperated James Caan (as Buddy's biological father Walter Hobbs, who is on Santa's "Naughty List"), a perfectly deadpan Bob Newhart (as Papa Elf), Mary Stenburgen (as Walter's bemused wife Emily), Zooey Deschanell as Buddy's sweetheart Jovie ("I'm just trying to get through the holidays"), and Edward Asner as a crusty but kind-hearted Santa Claus, is wonderful. The script and dialogue are smart and snappy. Buddy's remark to Art Lang as a department-store Santa Claus,-- "You sit on a throne of lies!"-- is priceless. "Elf" is all heart, and the heart is in the right place. Plus, the 2-DVD set is packed with all sorts of extra Christmas goodies. If "Elf" doesn't put you in a Merry Christmas mood, nothing will.
Movie Review: WONDERFUL! THE SANTA CLAUSE MEETS PETER PAN! Summary: 5 Stars
ELF is the sort of movie that can keep you coming back, even a would-be doubter like me. No, I don't doubt the existence of Santa Claus and, no, I don't doubt the existence of Peter Pan (Johnny Depp convinced me of that one). I doubted a story about a gigantic Christmas elf and starring Will Farrell. Farrell, admittedly a new comic genius, just seemed way too "out there" to pull this one off so I didn't watch it until my two sons dared me to.
In a word: charming! Farrell is wonderful as Buddy, a misplaced orphan who goes there (to the North Pole) and back again (to New York City) on a wonderful Christmas odyssey that is right up there with THE SANTA CLAUSE. Ed Asner is absolutely spectacular as Santa. His explanation of Christmas Cheer and its impact on certain Christmas traditions is about as good a thing as clapping in order to revive fallen fairies ala Peter Pan.
It was also good to see James Caan in his warmest role since BRIAN'S SONG, playing Buddy's human father. On Santa's "Bad List" but with considerable hope. I was beginning to think he had just become the consummate bad guy. Maybe some of that Christmas cheer found its way into old Jimmy's heart? Could very well be.
Elf also sports an exceptional supporting cast including Bob Newhart as Buddy's adoptive father, Papa Elf, Mary Steenburgen as Caan's movie wife, Emily and Daniel Tay as Buddy's human brother, Michael. Zooey Deschanel is perfect as Buddy's love interest, Jovie. Pick this one up for Christmas 2005 and for many Christmases to come!
THE HORSEMAN
Movie Review: Will Ferrell is my favorite 'Elf'! Summary: 5 Stars
`Elf' is probably one of my favorite Christmas films for its funny and sweet and original and did I mention funny yet? I love Will Ferrell and so maybe I'm a bit bias when giving this such a high rating, but I can't help it. I watch this movie quite a bit and every time I'm reminded of why I love it. The story is about a young orphan who ends up a stow-away one Christmas when he slips out of his crib and slips into Santa's big bag of toys. When Santa finds out he has a new guest he leaves baby duty up to one of the older elves (Bob Newhart) who never found love and thus never was able to have the children he wanted so badly. When Buddy (Ferrell) gets older though he soon realizes he's not like the other elves and this sends him on a journey to find his real parents.
This journey leads him to Walter (James Caan), his father, a man who horrifically lands on Santa's `bad list' year after year. The fact that Santa is all but not believed in make it difficult for anyone, including his own father, to believe Buddy, but the viewer is moved to love him more and more with each passing frame. This is a perfect role for Will, allowing him to tone down his over the top antics (I love those too) and give us a more family friendly performance that's as funny as it is charming. As Buddy strives to gain his fathers love and affection he must also try and resurrect the Christmas Spirit that so many have lost. With great supporting performances by Zooey Deshanel and Mary Steenburgen, `Elf' is a delightful holiday film that is sure to please the whole family!
