Movie Reviews of Elf [Blu-ray]Movie Review: One of the best Xmas comedies Summary: 5 Stars
I've watched this every Xmas since it came out and it never ages, just like other real yuletime classics such as A Christmas Story, Scrooged, and of course the best of the bunch, the original Grinch. But Elf has its very own wonderfully weird flavor, mainly due to one of Ferrell's finest turns on camera.
Will does innocent/goofy as well as anyone ever has, and this is his peak in that realm. It's hard to imagine anybody else even touching this performance, and he's given excellent support by Bob Newhart and James Caan, among others. There are so many good laughs you can't count them, at least one a minute all the way through.
The blu-ray was done quite perfectly, a near-flawless transfer, with lots of extras including a nice commentary track with Will alone. The guy is as dry as a Bond martini, and always entertaining. Director Favreau also has one, and he's to be commended for his work here, especially the many unusual pastel colors and semi-real scenes that really glow in blu-ray. Elf is fun to watch just for the eye candy, in fact.
But there's so much more to enjoy here; add in the endless sly humor and very real heart and you've got one of the all-time great Christmas laugh fests.
Summary of Elf [Blu-ray]ELF - Blu-Ray Movie Elf is genuinely good. Not just Saturday Night Live-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; Elf is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, Elf is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (Swingers) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, Elf feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. --Bret Fetzer Stills from Elf (click for larger image)
