Movie Reviews of Eight MillimeterMovie Review: A Great Moral, Perhaps Not the Best Delivery Summary: 4 Stars
One of the criticisms leveled against the film industry today is that its movies are full of immorality. Comedic films are full of crude sexual references and unnecessary nudity. Films that may well have a great moral to them, such as the Wedding Crashers, which leaves Owen Wilson happier having found everlasting love with a wonderful woman, rather than continuing his life of meaningless and unfulfilling sexual encounters, are marred by the use of sexual humor and nudity.
8MM, like many films has a great moral to it, AVOID PORNOGRAPHY! Each of the characters involved in the murder of the girl are led to their crime by pornography. Likewise, each character involved dies in some way surrounded by their pornographic material. As Cage and Phoenix visit both the legal and illegal side of the vile business, consumers of the material are shown to be captivated by their desires, practicing both day and night. Similarly, this movie challenges the argument that pornography is a victimless crime, for each woman involved with pornography in the film is demonstrated as exploited and abused.
That being said and returning to the film industry's use of sexual humor and nudity, this film's exploration and revelation of the porn industry is very graphic and makes one wonder if it is not over the top. However, this graphic quality may help to hammer home the moral, leaving the audience with a firm determination to avoid pornographic material. Hopefully, one will not walk away from this film thinking either certain actors did not perform well or that this was a great thriller, the most important thing one can walk away with is the moral.
Movie Review: A Descent into Hell Summary: 4 Stars
PI Nicholas Cage must investigate a film which is part of the estate of a millionaire. After viewing it (and thinking that it might be a "snuff" film), Cage accepts the assignment from the widow of trying to determine the identity of the girl in the film and what really happened to her.
I have always thought that Cage is this era's Jimmy Stewart and the first half of the film stengthened this belief but as the movie descended into extreme violence and extreme language, I kept on trying to imagine if Jimmy Stewart would appear in such a movie. My answer is probably "yes" because, unfortunately, we are in a different era.
I loved the first half of the film (especially the scenes with the victim's mother) but the second half was, maybe, a little over the top. It shows a decent man's descent into Hell and is definatly not for the squeamish or the young.
Overall, a good film but not for everyone. It did remind me of George C. Scott's "Hardcore" which I saw years ago.
Movie Review: Into The Abyss... Summary: 4 Stars
I am certainly NOT a Nicolas Cage fanatic, and I've never liked much of Joel Schumacher's work (especially his ultra-silly Batman sequels). However, I did find 8MM to be interesting as well as somewhat disturbing. Cage, as private investigator Tom Welles, must plumb the depths of human depravity and degradation in order to uncover the truth behind a snuff film. Though goofy in spots, I was pleased by most of the dialogue and action. Joaquine Phoenix is excellent as porn-shop worker, Max California. As a sort of tour-guide, he leads Welles down through deeper, ever darkening levels of illicit behavior, into an underground universe where anything goes. Peter Stormare (Fargo, Unknown) is his usual eeevil self as bondage-film auteur, and all around madman, Dino Velvet. James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano himself!) is a perfectly sleazy [...]-producer. 8MM is a quick trip into the dark recesses of extreme perversion, where only the demons dare to walk. For an american movie, it's (fairly) shocking...
Movie Review: Beware Of Brutal Topic Summary: 4 Stars
Wow, this is a tough subject but not as sordid a film as I figured it would be, although be warned the last 30 minutes are really rough in spots. Yet, despite the unpleasant nature of the story (making a "snuff film" - filming the killing of people) it's a riveting one, well-acted and doesn't overdo the violence. The characters in here are some of the most despicable you could find - killer and porn kings.
Even our hero here, played by Nicholas Cage, starts off as a clean-cut fairly straight dude, and changes for the worst, too. Joaquin Phoenix has a good line in here, with the prophetic statement, "The devil doesn't change; he changes you."
James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare play characters about as bad you'll ever find in a movie. This film is not, as they say, for all tastes. It will turn off a lot of people but it is interesting and good revenge story, if you like that sort of thing and know what you're in for before watching this.
Movie Review: This is a very good movie about an unfortunate situation. Summary: 4 Stars
I think this is the movie that introduced the idea of snuff films to the American audience. It's very good at creating an atmosphere of dread and sorrow plus a kind of creepy in love with a dominant wife marital situation. I also think this is one of the first in a long line of movies set in and showing the jagged dead end of working poor industrial town American life (shown most prevailingly in Eliza Dushku's The Alphabet Killer.) This movie is also available in a double-pack with 8mm 2. The unrelated 8mm 2 is interesting in a late night cable movie way i.e. competent to above average filmmaking shot in Eastern Europe on a low budget but about ruthlessness and showing one side of an imbalanced relationship. I'm glad I saw both movies. The first movie is the better movie. I wouldn't want to own either movie but I don't think either film would be a waste of time to watch.
