Movie Reviews of Eddie and the Cruisers

Movie Review: amazing movie....great ending
Summary: 5 Stars

Eddie and The Cruisers is a classic film about a band from New Jersey who at the peak of their fame, lost their lead singer in a tragic car accident.

Now 18 years late, the Crusiers are atop the charts again despite not having played since that fateful day 18 years ago.

A local music reporter wants to run a story and find out what happened to their second album that was recorded, but never released. She starts to trace the band members starting with Frank, aka "Wordman".

Frank is unwilling to talk much about the past until he gets a phone call from Doc, now a radio dj, but the band's former manager. Seems that both Doc and Frank's home has been vandalized and whoever broke into their homes, was looking soley for A Season in Hell, the band's legendary never released 2nd album.

Frank eventually checks up on the rest of the band, and only until he meets Joann (Eddie's girl and backup vocalist) does he find out what happened after Eddie left the studio that fateful night.

The key to the movie really comes from his argument with Sal (the band's bassist) in which Eddie tells him that he wants to be great with their 2nd album, to which Sal responds that they aren't great, but rather just a band from Jersey.

Eddie leaves and the rest is written into history.

I won't give away the film, but i'll say this, it's worth watching, not once, but five or six times. The music is amazing (John Cafferty and the Brown Beaver Band), the acting is solid, and the storyline is creative and unique.

Eddie and the Cruisers is a great film.

Movie Review: A 1980's Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This was, hands-down, my favorite movie of the 1980's - nothing else could compare! The story line was great, and the music was awesome - in fact, I wore out several tapes of this soundtrack because I wouldn't stop playing them - over & over again!

Eddie & The Cruisers is about the disappearance of a rock star in an up & coming band, and a reporter who's trying to uncover a story about the missing tapes from their last recording together.

In the movie, Eddie is determined to change the direction of the music his band is playing, but not all of the members agree with his new style. Although there's dissention in the ranks, they decide to go to the studio to make a recording for their new album, and before they are completely finished, Eddies car is found having crashed over a bridge - his body is never found. Is he dead??? Then, the day after the crash, the master tapes from their last recording go missing. Who would take them? Why?

Years later, a reporter is doing a story on trying to uncover the mystery surrounding the missing tapes. She tracks down and speaks to all of the members of the old band - except Eddie who was never found. Will they have any information that will help solve this mystery? Will Eddie ever be found?

I won't answer any of these questions, because I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't seen this movie yet. Suffice it to say that this is an awesome movie, and is a "must see" for those who grew up in the 80's and/or love "Jersey rock-n-roll". I give it a 2 thumbs up!!!

Movie Review: The World Needs Dreamers
Summary: 5 Stars

Since there are plenty of reviews, I will keep this short. Eddie and the Cruisers were about to break out from there rock and roll mold, with a second album reminiscent of the Doors. The "Powers That Be", holding the purse strings don't like the new album and crush Eddie's dream of being the best. Eddie crashes his car into a body of water, never to be found. Nearly 20 years later the music of Eddie and the Cruisers takes on a second life, with one of the band members still rocking at the Holiday Inn. The missing tapes of the second album are the quest throughout the picture, as is the question - Is Eddie still alive?

This is unquestionably, one of the finest rock and roll films (especially from the 1980's). This movie will appeal to the once 20 plus year age crowd of the 80's era, but may not be so well received by the masses today. The movie utilizes flashbacks throughout the film to portray the life of the band, with the music well done. I disagree with Amazon, and found the Beaver Brown Band to be very good. So what, if in parts they sound like Springsteen - must be the Springsteen Sax sound (Clarence Clemons)

The transfer to DVD is good. There is the occasional blip on the screen (does not detract from the film), from age, and lack of digital remake/upgrade. The soundtrack is in stereo (sorry no 5.1 remix), but the music sounds great. I turned on my 6.1 DTS decoder and was very pleased.

Overall, I would recommend this movie and will watch again. This is a definite purchase.

Movie Review: Simply STUNNING
Summary: 5 Stars

Having a wide taste in music, my favourite music above all other music is undoubtedly Rock 'N' Roll. Being a fan of Spinal Tap, Pink Floyd and King Crimson, my tastes normally go towards experimental music, or music that is different and interesting. I do however enjoy a good musical and Rock 'N' Roll from the greats. With Eddie and the Cruisers to use a phrase from another well known Rock Opera, I didn't just get my Rock craving fix, I got so much more. I got a lot more. I watched Eddie and the cruisers with Eddie and the cruisers 2, back to back. By the end of the second movie, I had tears rolling down my face. These movies are beautiful. Pure rock at it's best. I was awe struck by Michael's performance of Eddie and appreciated the care taken to emphasize that good music is not about spewing out a million notes a second. It's about playing with meaning and from the heart. After all music is one of the spices of humanity. There's nothing wrong with flashy shredder playing once in a while, but a whole albumn worth can be most tedious. Basically Eddie pointed towards STYLE. Eddie and the cruisers is simply perfection from beginning to end.

DON'T WATCH the second movie until you have seen the first. MORE IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE, WATCH THESE MOVIES TOGETHER. If only these fantastic musicians could help kill the record companies teenie bopper nonsense and put good rock music like this back into the mainstream, life would be bliss. ROCK ON EDDIE!

Movie Review: A brilliant rock blend!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're familiar with the history of American and British rock, and the people who were pioneers in it, you'll see hints here of Buddy Holly, John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Jim Morrison, and others in the interactions between Eddie Wilson, the brilliant, enigmatic leader of the Cruisers, and his sidemen. The idea of a rock band leader even knowing who Arthur Rimbaud was, let alone composing a rock song called "A Season In Hell," is most intriguing.
The story is woven expertly as the plot leads one to believe he has figured out what the climax is going to be -- then knocks him for a loop with what appears to be one of those "explaining it all away logically" endings that are so frustrating to those of us who have a love for fantasy.
Then -- just when you think the film is ending predictably, there is the famous shot of the people standing outside a store window, watching a news report about the story of Eddie and the Cruisers on a TV in that window. That final scene, with its brilliant denouement, is one of the most affecting I've ever seen in a movie.
If you have never seen "Eddie and the Cruisers," rent it. Or better yet, buy it from Amazon. You won't be sorry.
