Movie Reviews of Eddie Murphy RawMovie Review: Improving English Slang Summary: 4 Stars
A handsome guy highlights his natural attractiveness by instantly informing audience of same sex attracted beauties' offers, speaks of dealing with chicks and relatives while scratching bulge and making funny grimaces, bare chest out.
Very good for improving English-American slang.
Movie Review: Good stuff Summary: 4 Stars
Brought back memories. Not as funny as delirious, but good none the less. It's worth the price if only for sentimental viewing. It's just weird seeing Eddie Murphy so young and RAW. :-)
Movie Review: No where's near as good as "Delirious" Summary: 3 Stars
"Delirious" is the performance that made him a star. The humor on "Delirious" was far more variable too. He did more celebrity impressions and even created exaggerated performances of his own family. He took the subjects of humor that Bill Cosby probably would do, but Eddie Murphy made it far more nastier.
But, this performance on "Raw", just seemed like he had some indirect points to make regarding his own problems involving a particular woman recently in his life. You can see and hear some sincere bitterness in this performance.
Sorry Eddie. I guess I'll just wait for "Delirious" to get released on DVD, hopefully, someday.
Even Bill Cosby's 1982 performance on DVD called "Bill Cosby Himself", is alot more hilarious than Eddie's "Raw". And Cosby's performance is generally quite clean. And, to me, if you can be hilarious as hell, and get people rolling on the floor laughing, without having to be vulgar in any way, this is what makes a comedian great. I've always thought that people who have to use fowl language to express themselves is usually a sign of someone trying, very loudly, to cover up their ignorance. Black and white people both do it. But, I guess it's routine for black comedians to depend on it more than white comedians. After all, consider their audience.
Update: "Delirious" is now available on DVD (as of February 2007).
Movie Review: LEFT ME LESS THAN DELIRIOUS Summary: 3 Stars
"Delirious", Eddie Murphy's stand up classic was one of a kind...outstanding, and a laugh every ten seconds. "Raw", his follow-up to "Delirious" is not even a poor cousin. It tends to drag, particularly the misogynistic sequence about women & marriage, and the telephone conversation with his father regarding a bar brawl. "Raw" lacks the vitality & fresh humour that made "Delirious" truly delirious. The redeeming factors are Murphy's mimicry talents, particularly his takes on Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson & Mr. T.
All said and done, it is worth possessing only if you are a die-hard Eddie fan (as I am)...otherwise see this only once (let a friend buy it instead of you).
Movie Review: Not Bad, But No "Delirious" Summary: 3 Stars
"Raw" came out on the heels of "Delirious", one of the funniest live performances ever capyured on film and Eddie Murphy's personal zenith. So popular was "Delirious"(why isn't it available on DVD?) that, politically incorrect as it was, much of it entered the lexicon of popular culture. For "Raw", Eddie came out in angry mode, stung from his recent divorce and ready to rant. While effective in a forceful way, "Raw" struck many as a mean-spirited diatribe. "Raw" is ultimately far less satisfying than "Delirious", so why is it released instead of it's far-superior predecessor?
