Movie Reviews of Eddie Murphy Raw

Movie Review: Raw Talent
Summary: 4 Stars

I caught this the other night on late night cable TV and, if anyone has forgotten just how funny and talented Eddie Murphy was, they should go back and check out this DVD, his first stand-up performance called DELIRIOUS (which I understand isn't available on DVD), and his first movie, 48 HOURS with Nick Nolte.

I'd seen RAW several times but I still laugh out loud at Eddie's raunchy phrases and hilarious expressions. "Funny" just flows out of him.

I haven't seen his last few films because, to be honest, they just look like safe, family paychecks (his last movie that tapped into his great talents was THE NUTTY PROFESSOR). Like Steve Martin, you really need to dig into their earlier stuff to see what made them so successful.

Movie Review: Nowhere Near As Good As "Delirious"
Summary: 4 Stars

Eddie Murphy's stand up comedy show "Delirious" was a classic. Taking on homosexuals (including the classic "Honeymooners bit), amous people and other comedic taboos, it was one of the funniest standup performances in history. Three years later, "Eddie Murhphy Raw" was released. The show is very funny, but it is also disappointing. It starts off with a good natured Thansksgiving sketch that had a very animal joke, but nothing can really top that. Eddie's bits are indeed hilarious, however, in comparison to "Delirious", it seems like a bad "Saturday Night live" opening monologue. So why I'll recommend this dvd, keep in mind that you should search for "Delirious" first.

Movie Review: Pretty Good
Summary: 4 Stars

Not quite as funny as Eddie Murphy - Delirious, but makes it worth it with a few routines, especially with the opening bits about reaction to that previous effort. There's an odd opening of a childhood scene and a closing where, I think, he's trying to live up to his father's rant in the first, but most of this stuff- the Rocky bit, the Caribbean bit (even pictured on the case, so I know I'm not alone)- is gold.

Movie Review: Come back to the stage, Eddie, please...
Summary: 4 Stars

When looking at this perfectly preserved time-capsule piece from the 80's, it's easy to see why Eddie Murphy thrilled and offended so many people when he was at his absolute peak. And, considering how "RAW" effectively marked the end of his stand-up career and the beginning of a long, painful slide into movie also-ran status, one just has to quote from Eddie's African bush-bride Umfoofoo: "EDDIE! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?!?"

Movie Review: Not bad at all
Summary: 4 Stars

First of all I'd like to clarify, that I really liked this one. It's really good, funny, but maybe - as it's title suggests - a bit raw. I also have Delirious, and I liked it more. Delirious is softer, but I laughed more on that one. I suggest Raw to anyone, who liked Delirious, and not frightened by some nasty language. Sometimes I was. Maybe because I have some skeletons in my closet, if you know what I mean... :-)
