Movie Reviews of Eat Drink Man WomanMovie Review: Unforgetable lesson in family bond Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie 9 years ago while spending a semester abroad. Everytime I see this movie-and I have mulitple times since my first viewing-I think back to that most amazing and incredible time in my life. Most importantly I am reminded of the unshakable family bond that exists but is never really communicated amongst all families. I love the dynamics of this family because they are indeed a real family experiencing the ups and downs of real life. I loved how much I-a Puerto Rican living in America-related to a Chinese family. The movie is a great testament that regardless of who you are or where you come from we are human and we are share in the life experiences that being a human means. The movie brought tears, laughs and unexpected gratitude for my family's own misgivings.
Movie Review: Fills you up Summary: 5 Stars
Warning: Do not watch this movie if you are hungry! If you do, within the first 10 minutes, you will pause it, and have to run out for chinese food instantly and not the quick take out junk either, but the honest to god traditional chinese cuisine that the father makes. I adore this movie, It is a heartwarming, hilarious story about a Widower Retired Master Chef and his Three very different daughters. Ang Lee gives us insight into this family from the perspective of how love and life and humanity can be compared to eating and drinking. The soundtrack is amazing, the scenery is magnificent and the realness of it all transport you in, so that you can almost smell the food cooking. I would have killed to be on that set to just sample all those dishes!
Movie Review: A moving human story about a great culinary tradition Summary: 5 Stars
This is a movie about food, about life in Taiwan and about human nature. In mainland China, hardline Communist Mao repressed the traditional Chinese cuisine as an expression of bourgeois decadence. Everyone had to have the same bowl of rice, and in fact they were lucky to get even that. In Taiwan, on the contrary, traditional Chinese food thrived and flourished, side by side with local Taiwanese as well as Japanese cuisine. In fact I have had my best Chinese food ever in Taiwan, and Hong Kong, not China. And in the end, our protagonist is right, Eat Drink Man and Woman, what else is really important in life? Strongly recommend to see this movie early in the evening so you can book yourself a table at a good Chinese restaurant afterwards!
Movie Review: DVD Review Summary: 5 Stars
Eat Drink Man Woman is a joyous film that celebrates family, love, and food. Sure to evoke smiles, laughs, and tears. The film is wonderfully entertaining as the lives of three sisters and their father go through changes due to unexpected events. Throughout we are treated to breathtaking photography that caress and studies the art of food perparation. The film is sure to make anyone hungry.Video: (1:85) A great transfer from MGM, good sharpess and shadow detail. Sound: Clean and clear, very good audio track. Extras: Trailers and an interview with Ang and his co-writer. Do not watch the interview if you haven't seen the film, it gives away all the pleasant surprises in the film.
Movie Review: Very entertaining. Don't watch it with an empty stomach! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie starts with an authentic look at Chinese cuisine (it hurts to be in Charleston, which has no good Chinese restaurants). Anyways, the plot revolves around Mr. Chu, who is a famous chef in the Grand Hotel of Taipei. Every week, he painstakingly prepares a sumptuous feast ranging from steamed dumplings, roasted pork shoulder to Peking duck for his 3 unmarried daughters who showed little appreciation to all the cullinary delights. Little by little we are introduced to the lives of his three daughters and the men they meet. Eventually, all three of them found what they were looking for in life, and so did master chef Chu in a rather surprising twist. Bon apetite!
