Movie Reviews of Eat Drink Man Woman

Movie Review: So excellent a movie, it's been copied by Hollywood!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is one that focuses on food to get one's mouth watering (particularly if you like the Chinese cuisine) and family. It's a story of family and daughters growing up, leaving their father. I made a large batch of Hot-and-Sour soup (Taiwanese style) for dinner after the movie inspired by suggestions by other reviews here. That was a good move.

This movie was remade in Hollywood as "Tortilla Soup", changing Chinese food to Mexican food. This movie is very nearly identical to "Tortilla Soup" which I liked even more -- probably because it's mostly in English and I did't need to read the subtitles like on Eat Drink Man Woman. However, I still very much liked this "original" version where some details are slightly different. Can't go wrong with the original! The interview with the director/co-author (who also has co-authorship credit on the T.S. version) on the DVD also is quite entertaining (and is in English).

Movie Review: A 5-course treat!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ang Lee made his mark with this movie, Yin shi nan nu, his last in his native home of Taiwan before striking out for Hollywood, although Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon represented a return of sorts. Be cautioned though, don't watch this movie on an empty stomach, as the story revolves around food. A chef has lost his taste for food, and has to rely on his long-time assistant to taste the food for him. Contemplating retirement, Chu tries to bring out the most in one of his daughters, hoping that she will follow in his footsteps. However, it is in his youngest daughter that he finds a budding talent, but first he has to repair the bond between them, which had broken apart after the death of his wife. Ang Lee delicately focuses on this relationship, bringing father and daughter slowly together over the course of the movie. He fills out the story with so many spicy details that it will leave your mouth watering for more.

Movie Review: See hear laugh cry
Summary: 5 Stars

Master Chu (Sihung Lung) is a semi-retired chef living with his three unmarried daughters (Kuei-Mei Yang, Chien-Lien Wu, and Yu-Wen Wang). This wonderful film spans the period of their lives that sees a number of significant changes in the lives of the family members. Although family relations are often strained, they always come together around a sumptuous Sunday dinner prepared by Chu. Throughout the film, these dinners are punctuated by formal announcements by the daughters that herald major changes for everyone. At the end of the film, Chu himself has an announcement that no one expects.

Many factors combine to make this such a wonderful film. In addition to the talented cast, director Ang Lee gives us a rich feel for the texture of life in modern Taiwan as well as gorgeously shot cooking sequences that will have you rushing to the refrigerator (or the nearest Chinese resteraunt). Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Ang Lee's finest
Summary: 5 Stars

While "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" does have it's visual hype and "Sense and Sensability" also recieved high acclaim, "Eat Drink Man Woman" is definately Ang Lee's best film. This touching film follows the lives of a master chef and his three lovely daughters. If you've seen any of the previews for this film, it's really nothing like the movie itself. The picture is very much about relationships, the relationships of the daughters and their love interests, among themselves, and with the father. There are some really funny parts to this movie and some really serious ones. I guess this would be a really great "date movie," it has all the ingredients to equate to one. It's just a shame that many audiences can't enjoy movies with subtitles. But if you're a film enthusiast, and are in the mood for something light, give this a try, it has a lot of spirit.

Movie Review: 4 Lives Mix Well And Serve
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a movie about a widowed man and his love of his three daughters. This is not your typical film of a man who has just lost his wife, but is more a tale of the life long after her death.

The main story is really that of each person's love life, and how their lives effect each other. The father is master chief who has lost all his sense of taste, the oldest daughter who is a cynical school teacher who refuses to fall in love, the middle daughter who is more about her carrier then that of love, and the youngest who's choices in love change her entire life.

This movie takes the four lives of the family, mixes them together, and comes out with one very great movie. Watch the movie with subtitles. The movie is an exciting and moving look into the lives of very special family as they each move, and grow.
