Movie Reviews of East Is East

Movie Review: East is...BOOM!
Summary: 4 Stars

A retrospective review of this movie, post 7/7, is in order. Viewed in the post-7/7 environment, you can see some of the alienation that native-born Brits of Pakistani descent must feel, and the tension between Western individualism (e.g., the brother who flees the wedding in the beginning) and eastern religious orthodoxy. Present too are glimpses of the violent cultural pathologies such as that of the father vis a vis the mother.

When I first saw this movie in 2000 I was disturbed by its uneven tone -- lighthearted one second then in a flash heavy-handed (literally) and vicious. In retrospect, I can see the movie captured something real in its depiction of cultural viciousness. Something also manifested on 7/7.

Movie Review: Om Puri is magnificent!
Summary: 4 Stars

Om Puri and Linda Basset turned in the year's most overlooked great performances in this hilarious, insightful comedy. A massive hit in Britain, the film was somewhat ignored by audiences when it released here in early 2000. The film is exceptionally funny, and it's great to see a comedy that actually has a good deal of emotional substance... they're far too rare. The subject material is fairly original, and the film is carried off much better than the similar "My Son the Fanatic". I admire how the film succeeds in making its point subtly. By focusing on the specific, arbitrary rules of a Pakistani, the film showed how arbitrary most parents' ideals can be.

Movie Review: Brilliant
Summary: 4 Stars

East is East is about the struggle between a domineering migrant Pakistani father and his children born in England. The children embody strong English values though they look Pakistani. Dad arranges marriages for his sons in accordance with Pakistani custom, and they don't like it. Even after 25 years of marriage to his Anglo wife, George has not assimilated into British society.

The irony is that George's wife is English but he despises anything Anglo.

The movie has a wonderful soundtrack of Pakistani movie melodrama, and gives a informative insight into the lives of migrant families in UK.

Movie Review: watch it
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is about an english family with a pakistani father. It deals with the problems, they have with each other, because the children are more english, but the father wants them to be like pakistanis. There are also many other cultural, religious and social problems. I think, it has a great humour and it's also very exciting to watch, because of the unexpected turns. I would recommend it highly!

Movie Review: Tut tut
Summary: 4 Stars

To the numpty who wrote that the children were eating 'beacon'.
You sir, are missing the point entirely, the children do not want
to conform to the Muslim traditions and are confused about their identities. Hence the fact that they wait until their father leaves before they cook the bacon and sausages.
