Movie Reviews of ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling - Path Of Destruction (Uncensored)Movie Review: ECW At It's Best Summary: 4 StarsThis is one of the best DVDs to get, especially at the price that it is being sold at & if you are a true ECW fan. Most of the matches here went on to be classics & makes you wish that this organization was still around to this day.
Television Champion Chris Jericho vs 2 Cold Scorpio vs Pitbull #2 vs Shane Douglas. This match made history in so many ways at Heatwave 96. It featured one of the rare appearances in ECW by Chris Jericho, but more importantly the heel turn of Francine on the Pitbulls to begin her longtime association with Douglas & to top that off, Douglas broke Pitbull #1's neck with a DDT on the belt (no, he seriously did). The actual match itself went pass the call of duty & was a wrestling clinic that did not feature an elimination until about 30 minutes.
Television Champion Bam Bam Bigelow vs Rob Van Dam. This was the match that began RVD's historic 23-month reign as the Television Champion as this was one of the best little-man vs big man matches that I have seen. RVD's unusual style mixed well with Bam Bam's power offense that made for one hell of a match.
Stairway To Hell Match: Sandman vs Sabu. The object here was to climb up the ladder & grab the barbed wire to use during the match. A brutal match between these two that had Sandman bleeding buckets after taking one of the sickest falls through two tables. Also, check out the moment where the Sandman dove on to a table & the table did not give.
Taipei Death Match: Axl Rotten vs Ian Rotten. There is one funny moment where the referee Bill Alfonso stops this match for blood before he is chased out & the match is restarted. This is the reason that this set gets 4 instead of a 5 as these guys had broken glass glued to their taped knuckles which was an obvious bloodbath but nothing special past that.
Jerry Lynn vs Tajiri vs Super Crazy. If you only know these guys from their WWE runs, then you have no idea what you are missing. Awesome triangle match between these three at November 2 Remember 99 that had lucha libre action, Tajiri's stiff style of kicks & Lynn's great wrestling ability all rolled into one. Not to the mention the fun aerial maneuvers from the balconies worthy of Styles's "OH MY GOD" comments.
2 Out 3 Falls Match: Eddie Guerrero vs Dean Malenko. This is a professional wrestling fans dream match that either surpasses or ranks up there with the rest of their classic ECW encounters as they gave a tremendous performance. And on top of that, this was their last match in ECW before heading off to WCW & both men received a sendoff that any wrestler in the world would kill for. One of the greatest "wrestling" matches in ECW history.
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Psicosis. This was their ECW debuts before they went to WCW & these two went extreme with their mix of lucha libre style wrestling along with the usual hardcore action that you would see in ECW. Another awesome match between these two that I honestly felt was better than their future WCW encounters (Wonder where Eric Bischoff saw these guys? What A Liar).
DVD extras include various ECW promos from Steve Austin ("No Baby That's For Somebody Else" Classic), Taz & Bill Alfonzo, Eliminators, Stevie Richards, Public Enemy, the Pitbulls & Francine. Also hidden is Brian Pillman's controversial ECW debut that results in a fan being assaulted along with a confrontation with Shane Douglas, Tod Gordon, and Paul Heyman.
Overall, the only DUD here is the Rotten brothers bloodbath (unless you love seeing a bloody massacre) but this DVD has so many great matches that are worth adding to your collection. Highly recommended.
Summary of ECW: Extreme Championship Wrestling - Path Of Destruction (Uncensored)ECW- Extreme Championship Wrestling returns with the second installment of what has emerged as the most talked about wrestling video available... "Path of Destruction". The voice of Joey Stiles gives exclusive commentary and insight to memorable ECW matches. P.O.D. delivers the high-flying, hard-hitting, brutal action that pushes the limits of insanity to the point where it can only be labeled HARDCORE!!! "If it's blood you want, it's blood you're gonna get," screams Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) play-by-play announcer Joey Stiles. He's talking about the hardcore "Glass Match," which features two men sticking their taped hands in glue and then glass shards before doing battle... But, really, he could just as well be summing up all of ECW. Unlike the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling, ECW eschews flash and overwrought soap operas and focuses on brutal mutilation and, occasionally, some wrestling moves. This compilation tape (a follow-up to the extremely successful ECW: Extreme Evolution) of five matches showcases what makes ECW so popular among rabid wrestling fans. The collection starts with a four-man title match (featuring Chris Jericho, 2 Cold Scorpio, Pit Bull #2, and Shane "the Franchise" Douglas) that runs over 40 minutes and challenges any notions that these guys aren't athletes. It's exhausting. The centerpiece, however, is the Stairway to Hell match, featuring Sabu vs. Sandman. As you watch Sandman, head wrapped with barbed wire and gushing blood, repeatedly cane Sabu with a 4-foot stick, your month will just hang open. Perhaps the biggest star here, however, is Stiles. He's a maniac announcer with hilarious catch phrases like "Oh my gaaawwd!" sounding like South Park's Cartman calling wrestling. "Why watch bad boxing pay-per-view? You got ECW!" he bellows, and who can argue? --Dave McCoy
