Movie Review: Great performances, poorly filmed
Summary: 3 Stars
Slava and Giulini's collaborations of the Dvorak and Saint-Saens Concerti are admirable. Slava was in his early 50's in these videos. He was at his prime. However, the filming was poorly done. There were many precious cello solo parts that were filmed with either Slava's head shot only or bow and the strings close up shots. It is frustrating that you really can't see how the master played. On some passages, the camera moved to an irrelevant member of the orchestra. Comparing the filming with a 1999 "Live from Lincoln Center" TV program where Slava played the Dvorak with Kurt Mazur, Hugo Kach, the film director did not capture the spectacular playing of Slava.
