Movie Review: Not as good as I remembered
Summary: 2 Stars
It's all a bit dated, sadly - the sort of TV drama we used to see a lot of, but don't get made now; and watching this you can see why. It's all a bit predictable and slow. Still, to be fair, most of the acting is top notch (Colin Firth, Timothy Spall, James Wilby in particular, although the usually excellent Bill Paterson is something of a hammy characature). I know it's a period piece, but it's also a little hard to believe that 18-year old boys as this naive and awkward, even those with a sheltered public school upbringing. Not to mention the leads are a little long in the tooth (Tim Spall pushing thirty by this time). Still, it does have a certain charm and yes, I did enjoy a trip down memory lane.
Summary of Dutch Girls
DUTCH GIRLS is a raucous yet touching comedy about the antics of a group of 18-year-old prep school boys on a hockey trip to Amsterdam. Competition among the boys is keen to be chosen for the Strathdonald school hockey squad. Coach Mole is gratified at the sudden interest so many boys are showing in the team. He envisions resounding success on the hockey field with time to spare in the art galleries and museums of the colorful city. But as they hit town, sports and culture are the last things on these lads' minds. Colin Firth stars as Neil Truelove, a particularly shy and sensitive young player who's determined to have a fling with a Dutch girl. Co-stars Bill Paterson, Timothy Spall and James Wilby.
