Movie Reviews of Dune (Widescreen)

Movie Review: Glorious, Pseudo-religious Bombast!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a fan of the original books written by Frank Herbert.

A 2 hour movie could never hope to capture the detail present in those novels.

David Lynch does not attempt it. His Dune looks like a slice of religious instructional propaganda from the year 10 000 A.D. You can't watch this as a version of the book, it almost isn't. It's a peek into the Dune universe and enjoyable in its resulting inscrutability.

If you can learn to enjoy movies for something other than straight narrative and character development, then you might enjoy this. leave that stuff to other movies.

I still think it sets the pace for visual interpretations of science fiction novels. When I read Dune, I think of the David Lynch movie. The mini-series looked like a campy stage production.

Movie Review: David Lynch's DUNE is the only DUNE.
Summary: 5 Stars

Many people looked at Lynch's DUNE in a bad way upon
it's arrival in 1984. It was afterall a science fiction
adaptation of the one of the best sci-fi books ever written.
It was tough to watch. But I watched it again. I have watched
it many times and have decided that it captured the book
better than any could have. Including the miserable series
that ran on the Sci-Fi network.
Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides completely engulfed the role.
He stated at the time that he had read the book many times
as a child. He "became" Muaddib.
David Lynch mixed human emotions, heavy plot lines, and
incredible effects, such as the Third Stage Guildsman, and
I believe it was perfection in every way.

Movie Review: Dune - An Epic for Those Who Love Epics
Summary: 5 Stars

While David Lynch's film adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic DUNE is not without flaws, it offers the lover of expansive, detailed politico-military epics much to enjoy. The plot is not as byzantine as some reviewers made it out to be, but is complicated enough to keep the film from being predictable. The filmaker's efforts to make the plot come alive on four entirely different planets is both ambitous and wholly successful. Even if enjoyed only as a visual feast for the eyes, DUNE is a pleasure. Be warned however, film-goers who prefer comedy, constant action, or heavy romance may not enjoy DUNE that much. But if you love large, beautifully filmed epics like SPARTACUS, BRAVEHEART, and ALEXANDER NEVSKY, then DUNE is probably for you.

Movie Review: Visionary film
Summary: 5 Stars

Dune (directed by David Lynch) is one of the most immersive and visionary sci-fi movies ever. This film creates 4 different worlds in incredible visual detail. The story line, acting, and directing are all superb. This movie reminds me of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in that it is not perfect. It has flaws, such as the big worm battle-scene is too long. And they edited too much out of the movie in order to shorten it, and therefore it's hard to follow if you haven't read the book. I would knock off a 1/2 star if I could. But the high points of this movie are so excellent, like Dracula, that overall it's an great movie. See it, buy it, and if necessary either read the book or have a friend there who knows the story when you watch it.

Movie Review: Dune the best SF movie ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Dune is without a doubt one of the best SciFi movie ever made. When I saw it first it didn't make too much sense to me but after watching it again and again I started to really enjoy it. It still wasn't until I read the book by Frank Herbert that I understud all the plots and characters in the movie. Yet I still prefer the film over the book because it has so many wonderful aspects that the book didn't have, like Toto's wonderful music score, great looking sets and fine special effects considering it's age. In fact I think only one other book has the same scope and originality as Herbert's Dune and that is Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings, which I hope will become as good a movie as Dune.
