Movie Reviews of Dune (Widescreen)

Movie Review: A Sci-Fi masterpiece.
Summary: 5 Stars

In the tradition of other great filmmakers, David Lynch has set a benchmark with Dune. Stanley Kubrick practically created science fiction as a legitimate film genre with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Lynch in his own right has done the same. Dune displays incredible photography with its distinctly different settings: the exuberance of the emperor's throne room, the industrial coldness of Geidi Prime, the arid wasteland of Dune; each world contains such attention to detail that the viewer can imagine such places possibly existing. This is quite the accomplishment considering the age of the film.
The acting is very well done and the pacing of the film is acceptable (yet it does take an investment from the viewer. The film is usually only appreciated after seen a second or third time.).
Whether the movie version is loyal to Herbert's novel or not, it is without a doubt a great accomplishment in film; much more sophisticated than the 6 hour TV series which is trite in comparison.
A must for any serious sci-fi DVD collection!

Movie Review: Frank Herbert's True legacy
Summary: 5 Stars

Dune is the open door to fall in love with the whole Frank Herbert work. I was just a child when the dark and tragic vision of David Lynch made an impact in my life showing me a new whole concept of science fiction far beyond Star wars, more complex, deep and adult.
This time the good special effects wasn't the most important thing, not even the action, It' was the drama, the tragedy of Paul Atreides in his way to became a future messiah.
The best thing of David Lynch is the understanding of the whole universe of Frank Herbert making a movie that you can watch once and again finding new things.
The cast is the best they can found, far better acting than this trash for TV bad called Frank Herbert's Dune (is anything less a faithfully adaptation of Frank herbert work) and the soundtrack is amazing specially the love themes.
Forget the John Harrison brainless adaptation, the David Lynch version it's far beyond the common science fiction movie.

Movie Review: Truly a favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

I believe that this movie is fantastic. You need to first take into account that it was made in 1984. It doesn't have the excellent eye candy of 2000's but, for it's time, it was an incredible movie. Also, you're trying to squeeze the WHOLE BOOK (which is also an excellent book, I might add) into a couple of hours. Not happening.

This movie has a stimulating plotline, decent graphics, and decent acting. I give this five stars because it was put together so well. It gave a good face to the character and a good visual to the characters' experiences. So, I guess I would say that this movie is a wonderful accompaniment to the book as well as eye candy sans reading the book.

If you are looking for something closer to the book, try checking out the made for T.V. series, Dune, from England. It covers a lot that the movie missed and for die hard Herbet fans, it is a must see. Just realize that it is about FIVE hours in length and made for T.V. so the budget is not as high as the orignal movie.

Movie Review: I'll miss the sea...
Summary: 5 Stars

Even virtually 15 years (can you believe that!) after it's initial release it still mesmorizes me. Although there are obvious holes in the movie that those of us who read the novel are very much aware of, this adaptation of Frank Herberts epic novel feeds the imaginative senses with its wild, fantastic and mystifying vision of a world and a future that descriptively displays the familiar and continual struggles and intrigues of empire and civilization that is the story of human history. Schemes and plots, mystery and fantasy, sacrifice and violence, trials and triblutation, this story has it all. I highly recommend this movie and just like many other I know, still hope for the release of the 190 minute version which helps fill some of the holes found in the initial theatre release. The absolute best closing music score I've heard, ever. It just so perfectly complemented the movie. any way, I've babbled enough about this movie.....indeed, THEY SHALL COME ALL FOR VIOLENCE..

Movie Review: The Weird of Dune
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw previews of this film when I was 14, worms?, strange suits?, yes, yes, I had no idea that I would learn to appreciate the Herbert/Lynch realm. I then saw it a few years later and was totally blown away at what a wonderful and strange universe Lynch had created. I had never seen anything like it before and I was raised on a very sterile Star Wars. The mythology explored was fantastic. Each character had an individual notion and was strange, exotic and weird. This is a film I will remember forever. Great sets, great costumes, and the dialogue is sufficient to keep you interested. I liked the Mentats, the evil Harkoneens, the Sarkadaur were awesome! The space scenes were bizarre, the guild navigators from another universe! It goes on and on, in a believable world not of our own. No, you won't understand everything about it, but that is the good part, that your quest will take you to new levels. I read the book and all the sequels after this. Thank you Mr Lynch!
