Movie Reviews of Dune (Widescreen)Movie Review: Confused? Maybe... Dazzled? YES! Summary: 5 Stars
The plot may be hard to follow at times but this has been my favorite movie since the day a saw it... I'm 14 years old now and I was 13 when I first saw it. I understood just about everything. Maybe it's one of my many quirks that made me like this movie... After all, I'm a big fan of the corny 80's movie "Tron." Considering the year in which this was made, the special effects are pretty good. The Sci-Fi channel recently put out a mini-series of a revamped version of this "classic" and I must say that this version was much better. The date in which this takes place is just about enough to catch your interest. 10,991. There are so many ways Frank Herbert could've seen the future. I think the movie director interpreted it very nicely. I don't have a lot of free time to read but what I read of the original book was not that different from how the director interpreted it. I tried to read the book first but despite all my interest in the plot, my lack of time interfered with my reading. So, if you're at all like me, this movie will satisfy you no matter how creepy the little girl is at the end. (Tiny pale kid with a bad adult voice-over)
Movie Review: One of the best SF movies ever made! Summary: 5 Stars
I started reading the DUNE series when I was eleven and have read the prequels to the first book. After reading all the books, I went to Blockbuster to rent the movie. When I watched the movie, I thought it was great. I kept watching it over and over. The effects were great! The acting to me was great! But I was dissappointed at the end. It left the end wide open for a sequel. I went to the internet after seeing the movie to read the reviews... I was shocked! I think that people didn't like because they didn't under stand it. You probably need to read the book before you see the movie. But for those who liked the movie, an ongoing cult has been going on. I've seen the remake of film on the sci-fi channel, and thought it was ok. Not as great as the oringinal. The 3hour version has recently been on T.V. The newer seens were good, but that old guy talking was too much. With every new thing that we know about, he gives a 5 min history lesson. The movie was over-all great. One of the best movies I have seen. If there is a sci-fi movie you need to see, watch DUNE.
Movie Review: Dune is it the full version? Summary: 5 Stars
As most people are aware dune would of the number one science fiction film if it wasn't for the star wars series. I must admit that I've enjoyed watching this time and time again and have several versions, unforunatley all my versions suffer from the same problem (inc DVD release which states to be the full version) and that is they have large parts from the book missing that can leave you confused. The one thing that I noticed is the two children that are in the room when Paul destroys the stone obelisk in the room with the fremen, these are the things that confused me until I had read the book and found out how much the film had left out. However if you are not into reading then the only way you can see the full version is to purchase the japanese laserdisc (which is very expensive!), although I do not wish to put anyone off buying this film because it is a very enjoyable film and every film buff should have it in their collection, I would like people to know that it is not the full version.Yours Sincerley Steve Horton England
Movie Review: Still the Best Summary: 5 Stars
A lot of fans of the book have derided the original Dune movie - for example, the addition of the "weirding modules" was totally out of line with the original novel. However, in retrospect, Lynch did a masterful job. The universe of Dune looks precisely as it should - the tough, hard, sandblasted Fremen - the noble Atreides, the grim industrial nightmare of Giedi Prime. The holes in the movie and its plotline are easily ignored when it is remembered how close to the mark the movie comes to being an accurate representation of how the Dune universe should appear. The cast is brilliant - all the way from Francesca Annis, who presents herself with a royal, yet vulnerable air. Sian Phillips as the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohaim is perfect. Kyle MacLachlan is splendid as Paul Muad'dib, and Jurgen Prochnow is perfect as Duke Leto. Special mention must go to Max von Sydow as Liet Kynes. It is the standard by which all other attempts at Dune (pay attention John Harrison) will be judged. So far, it has withstood the test of time.
Movie Review: Love it. Summary: 5 Stars
I grew up in a little town in Indiana. If you wanted to see a movie you had to drive 20 miles to Muncie which had a classic theater downtown with a balcony and a huge red curtain in front of a movie screen that was set over what looked like a narrow but long stage. They haven't shown movies there for years, but this is one of two movies that I can still remember seeing there (the other was Terry Gilliam's _Time Bandits_). The reason I can remember this one? Even though I was eight and my brother was four, we must have seen it at least three times.
I remember at the second or third viewing they were handing out a glossary of terms and definitions to explain things. I've never seen such a thing for any movie before or since. I remember later getting the movie on betamax and late nights watching it with my dad.
Anyway, my whole family loved this movie and we still do. It's weird, it's complex (yet simple once you unravel everyone's motives), it's stunning and thouroughly entertaining. One of my all time favorites.
