Movie Reviews of Dune (Widescreen)Movie Review: It's Long, it's Confusing, it's Fantastic... it's Dune. Summary: 5 Stars
Dune is a movie that some people love, some people can't stand it, most are just sort of confused... but a lot of people are fanatical about it. It's a long movie (and every few years it seems that a new even longer version is released), and while there's plenty of action, it's main appeal is in the form of it's rich visualization and characters. It's a highly visual movie, using unobtrusive special effects combined with some of the most badass scenery I've ever seen in a movie. If you've read the book, then keep in mind that this movie is just an adaptation - an improvement if you ask me. The original book harped on about a few subjects and was generally boring and superficial beyond that. The movie has a lot more depth - it doesn't go into all the environmental aspects that the author did, but the characters are much more real than they were in the book, and the plot is a little more sensical than before.Chances are, if you're looking this up, you've seen the movie. If you've seen it and are still reading this, then you probably already know you want it. The dvd version doesn't seem to have anything particularly improved to offer over most of the vhs versions, lacking some of the sound and detail of the laserdisk enhanced editions - but it's no worse than vhs... so if you want it on dvd go for it.
Movie Review: In hindsight excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
If I HAD to pick what I considered the "best SF novel so far", I would have to say it is DUNE.That in mind, when this movie version came out originally on VHS, I was mainly disappointed, yet appreciative of the effort. Over the years, I have probably seen this movie 20 times or more. Last week (March 2002), I watched the repulsive Dune TV mini-series. I then realised just how good the 1984 movie attempt is/was. OK, this movie does not follow the book exactly, and it is not possible to do the book justice in under 10 hours. The movie is lacking in its characterisation of a few of the second string characters such as Gurney Hallack, Duncan Idaho, Stilgar, etc etc. It, however, is excellently cast. The casted actors suit the characters wonderfully. Sting is excellent as Feyd, as are the actors who portrayed Paul, Alia, Jessica, the Duke, and escpecially the Australian actress who was Shaddap Mapps. I found "the voice" done excellently and I liked, and now appreciate even more, the way the characters' inner thoughts were portrayed to the viewer. I would have given this 3 to 4 stars in the past; but now having re-read the book (for the 20th time), watched the poor miniseries, and re-watched the VHS version, I now give this movie 5 stars. The DVD is on my birthday wish list!
Movie Review: A truly mesmerizing interpretation of Herbert's classic. Summary: 5 Stars
"We have just folded space from Ix. Many machines on Ix-new machines-better than those on Richesse." Several years ago I purchased what was then a state-of-the-art video system. I ordered the 12" laser disc version of "Dune" to be delivered along with the system. When I arrived home on the day the of delivery, I found the technician who installed the system seated in my den and absolutely mesmerized by the intense visual images on the screen. Without looking up, he said to me, "This is the greatest movie ever made." Inasmuch as "Dune" was by that time already firmly entrenched in my personal top five, I simply took a seat a watched with him. I had read Frank Herbert's "Dune" series many years before the film was made, a situation that frequently leads to disappointment. "Dune", however, is one of the very rare instances where the film version is not eclipsed by the written word. In fact, it is impossible to say that one is "better" than the other. Such a comparison is irrelevant when discussing masterpieces of this caliber. See this film with an open mind - you will not bedisappointed.
Movie Review: SC Summary: 5 Stars
This is movie is freaking crazy!!! I love it even though I know it isn't all that good. Now I know it is harsh and that this movie has taken its fair share of [criticism] from scifi buffs over the years, HOWEVER thats because that in so many ways the movie doesn't attempt to follow the book I mean its not a bad movie and it could have been so much better had they tried a little harder. My personal favorite part is in the beginning when Frank Herbert himself is narrating, that part was great. This way we know what the hell is going on of we have never read the books before(something incredibly rare in movies) Also I would like to add that for as much [criticism] as he got for acting STING did a great job. For example As for those parts that they could have erased and it would have been a lot better Heart Plugs? The Stupid New Weapons? An Army using sound as a weapon? And the one word that ticked me off the most SHHHHAAA!! I mean are any of us onvinced by this even for a second?(although I have to say the part with the Fermen riding in on the Sand Worms was very cool) Overall-OK movie doesn't deserve to be totally trashed
Movie Review: Wonderous and Intense Summary: 5 Stars
A VISION! There is no film as alien-feeling as Dune. You are suddenly not on Earth, or watching a movie created by Earthlings. You are immersed in an alien culture, and as such, you feel, at times: lost, intrigued, confused, fascinated, challenged, mystified, agape, and profoundly affected. Revel in its perplexity - that's Dune. There's sure no babysitter to hold your hand, but the puzzles are more rewarding when you solve them yourself. It's OK if you don't "get" everything. Repeated viewings are highly recommended and richly rewarding to those who like to think and don't pick their movies based on box office. A clarification to another review point: The longer TV version is NOT the "Director's Cut"! David Lynch would not allow the long hacked-up version to carry his name (rightly so!), and so the name "Allen Smythee" was tacked on, as is done in these instances. I don't recommend the long cut. Editing out the sweet, elegantly precise Princess Irulan narative, and replacing her with a cliche reveals the stultifying heavy hand of the long cut's handlers. I recommend the Lynch original. I love Dune! Enjoy!
