Movie Reviews of Dune (Widescreen)Movie Review: I'm still not bored of it, even after ten years! Summary: 5 Stars
So many films today are of the type you see once in the cinema, and never want to see again - particularly the major blockbusters. Dune however is different. It did not do too well at the box office, which isn't hard to explain, because it isn't a film you can sit down and understand in one go. (Unless you have read the book!) The best thing about Dune is the fact that because you cant understand it at first, you see it again, and again, until you do. When you understand it enough, you then decide to get the book, (If you haven't read it already, you're missing out.) and the book will blow you away. On returning to the film, The storyline seems simpler and in places, completely different. As I have read all of Frank Herbert's 'Dune saga', I wouldn't want a film that was a carbon copy of the first book. It would be too long and much of the book is monologue, (for instance - the Baron Harkonnen thinking to himself about Nefud's semuta addiction.) and this wouldn't work well in a film. All in all, I think that David Lynch has made the perfect film of Dune. It is complex enough to watch over and over again, and different enough from the books, not so much as to be disappointing, but yet even more watchable, because of the novelty value. The film adds to the books, the books add to the film, and if you buy the soundtrack, then you will notice a lot more of the music! This film is the greatest sci-fi of all time! (Flash Gordon runs a close second!) Alex, London, England
Movie Review: most (but not all) the reviews are accurate Summary: 5 Stars
The reviewer is right when he says it is a love-it or hate-it affair. If you like dark sci-fi movies (a la Bladerunner) you will probably enjoy it. Think of this as a vision movie. A lot is said in pictures, tone, and body language; not dialogue (much as Conan was told in music). Overall, it is better than the Sci Fi version, unless you are a FX junky, need dialogue driven storytelling, or were big on the book (as it does explain a lot more), in which case you will hate it. There are some major concerns. The effects are not great, but it was released in '84 with a budget nowhere near Return of the Jedi--come on. Remastering would probably help (as it did with Star Wars). Another concern of many is the constant whispering (to show the what the characters think). I personally loved this idea. But for those hard of hearing or easily annoyed, it can be aggravating. The story is fractured and syncopated. It was intended as such, to be told in dreams and windows to different characters. The one critical flaw (IMHO) is the breakdown of the story 3/4 way through (5 minutes was devoted to 2 years of time). I got the feeling that Lynch cut a bunch out right there. Also, the lack of expanation gets old. Whether or not these areas are the case with the 3+ hour TV version I can't recall as I have only seen it twice (the latest ~10 years ago). My suggestion: rent it and watch it, don't listen to us. You will like it or not, only you can decide.
Movie Review: Still the best by far! Summary: 5 Stars
I Fancy myself a bit of a Dune Fanatic. I've read the entire series of books quite a few times, And feel that I am familiar with the Universe that Frank Herbert Created in his Writings. Dune is a story that had a long road to make it to the theaters. Almost from it's writing, It was being sold as a great movie to make. And this, I feel is the movie that it was meant to be. While it does suffer from some omissions in plot, And from a 21st Century prospective, does lack in the Special Effects Department, This movie still infuses you with the feeling and tone of Frank Herbert's writings. Having recently seen the new Mini-series on TV, This movie still stays in my mind as the best version made. While some complain of the voice over thoughts and such in this movie, and how cryptic some scenes and statements may be, This story is one that takes place more in the minds, attitudes, and actions of it's characters, and just how their past, present, and future selves have affected the galaxy around them. I personally missed the thoughts in voice-over from the movie while watching the new Mini series, and actually found myself thinking of the dialouge set into my mind from this film. Also, Considering that this movie was made with the Author along for most of the ride, I feel that this is the best representaion commited to celluloid, of Frank Herbert's Masterpiece work. That said, I want Sequels! Kyle McLachlan is perfectly aged to reprise the role!!
Movie Review: AWESOME Summary: 5 Stars
If you liked the origional star wars over the new jack crahpola this is the film you've been waiting for! Think old star trek, think 80s, think science fiction as literature put on film with power. Think of the scene in star wars when Vader and governor Tarkin enter the war council aboard the death star. Forget new jack films and thier jean-claude van damme mentality. This film tracks a problem between 3 great feudal houses, a guild of space navigators, an ancient prophecy and a religious order entrusted to guard the prophesy by manipulating blood lines in royal houses in an empire 10,000 years old. Personally on of my top 5 all time. buy it. borrow it and dont return it. If only lynch had created a sequel. The TV version is utter trash. I laughed at it for 45 minutes and turned it off. Its the equivalent of star wars with jar jar compared to Luke Skywalker. This film wlll also appeal to readers who appreciate science fiction without the environmentalist [junk] and uppity attitudes and endless personal problems and allusions to tolerance and [stuff] like that on enterprise etc that now litter the sci fi genre. definatly not democrat scifi like next generation or x files. good hard feudalism with psionic weaponry and "slow-blades" distortion shields, and monsters. could have been a michael moorock novel or something a gary gygax game invented! AWESOME
