Movie Reviews of Drums Along the Mohawk

Movie Review: Drums along the Mohawk
Summary: 4 Stars

This has long been a favorite and now I have it on DVD. This movie has quality throughout. First Class movie.

Movie Review: Slow Moving Classic
Summary: 3 Stars

This is your standard Hollywood late 1930s movie about the frontier. Although set in the Revolution this film really could be just about anywhere in America's frontier period. The Indians for the period are pretty much stock characters and seem rather bumbling. The evil Tories lead them against the innocent, god-fearing rebels. Pretty standard stuff. I wish the minister with his fanatical tirades had gott'en tomahawked! I would have liked the real battle of Oriskany portrayed where general Hykeimer was actually wounded. In the film we only see him after the battle. The action scenes are pretty standard and not very exciting. I doubt any Indians would have rushed the stockade as portrayed here. Their usual tactic for the period was to surround and snipe away at these locations until they were starved out. Henry Fonda and Cluadette Colbert are adequate for their parts, but there is nothing spectacular about what they do in this film. The rest of the cast are your usual stock characters for a late 1930s Hollywood opus. Although only about 100 minutes this film seemed longer because of the slow pace of some of the scenes. There is a deffinite patriotic feel to it, and I think we can see some homey touches for the coming of WW2. Rather a bit heavy-handed at times. I will say the DVD color image is quite good, and the picture quality looks great. Otherwise a mediocre film at best. Typical of its period.

Movie Review: Mediocre Frontier Drama
Summary: 3 Stars

Most frontier stories are set in the 19th century. This one is set during the American Revolution when the frontier was literally in New York State. The historicity of this story is abysmal but the story is fair.

Henry Fonda plays a newlywed New York farmer who moves with his bride to the Mohawk Valley of New York. He just wants to prove his farm and raise his family. The American Revolution changes those plans however. His settlement finds itself under attack by Indians led by crown loyalists and Fonda is called to the colors to serve.

The story does have its light points but, all in all, it is not Fonda's best work.

Movie Review: Drums Along the Mohawk
Summary: 3 Stars

Drums Along the Mohawk is very entertaining movie with excellent cinematography, but alas it is somewhat dated, and the portrayal of Indians in particular leaves much to be desired. It would seem that the inspiration for Blue Back (played by Chief Big Tree) was Buckwheat from The Little Rascals. I couldn't help but cringe each time he was in a scene. It's a shame that such portrayals were once deemed acceptable. Aside from this, however, the movie does have its merits and is worth seeing if you're into historical films.

Movie Review: A perfect example of negative stereotyping!!
Summary: 3 Stars

Drums Along the Mohawk is a perfect example of films of that era that paid no attention to history and created and reenforced negative stereotypes about American Indian people. I use this film in my American Indians in Film class as an example of how inaccuracies and negative perceptions of American Indian people were created.
