Movie Reviews of Drums Along the MohawkMovie Review: Drums Along the Mohawk Summary: 5 Stars
ESSENTIAL MOVIE!!! The movie stars Claudette Colbert & Henry Fonda. It's based on a novel by Walter Edmonds of the same name. The period takes place at the outbreak of the American Revolution, one of the most poorly covered period of American history by Hollywood. Fonda & Colbert are husband & wife, Colbert coming from a well-to-do family. They moved to the Mohawk Valley in western New York to do farming. Of course, they are unprepared for the hostilities that break out with the Indians. The cinematography (nominated for an Academy Award) is beautiful & so is the color (nominated for an Academy Award). The film is directed by the great John Ford, one of America's best directors.
There aren't any bonus features in this version but it's a high quality product. Enjoy one of the few good movies ever made by Hollywood that involve this period of American history.

Movie Review: in a year that already saw him bring 2 classic movies to the screen john ford gives us one more Summary: 5 Stars
1939=the single best year in the history of movies.and john ford gave us three of the movies. young mr. lincoln, stagecoach, and this his first color movie(and what a movie)!!!!
"drums" tells the story of henry fonda(his second ford movie that year, after young mr. lincoln) and claudette colbert(looking beautiful in color) as a young couple just married and settleing in the mohawk valley in new york around the time of the revolutionary war. life is hard but the two make the best of it. the war is still to far away for them to care much, till indians stured up by torries in the area burn out fonda and colbert. then friends take them in and fonda joins the reserves.
the battle scenes are top notch as they always are in a ford film, and this is the best revolutionary war movie ever made, and the transfer looks great.a must have!!!!
Movie Review: HISTORICAL ADVENTURE COMES TO LIFE Summary: 5 Stars
Apple-cheeked Claubert and tall and gangly Fonda are so young, they're a pleasure to watch. All performances, including Ward Bond and Edna May Oliver, are exceptional and the color is amazing. "Drums Along The Mohawk" is an epic of the frontier that you'll want to watch again and again. Although the film takes place in upper New York State, viewing the terrain, it was probably shot in northern California. No matter. The film begins with hope alive and better things to come yet is dashed by the realities of the frontier and war. Battle scenes between indians and settlers can be a little frightening so I'd recommend that if you're going to let small children see this, an adult should sit with the child. A perfect film.
Movie Review: A Rare Revolutionary War Classic Summary: 5 Stars
There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"
