Movie Reviews of Driving LessonsMovie Review: Driving Lessons scores high Summary: 5 Stars
Rupert proves that he can leave Ron behind and do it well. Ben Marshall is a painfully shy quiet 17 year old, who tries to be the son his over bearing and frighteningly pious mother wants him to be. Even if it means keeping silent while she uses his weekly driving lessons to cover an affair. Which is really only the begining of Ben's troubles. He failed he's drivers test, his father is growing more distant by the day. The girl he's fallen for thinks he's weired, and to top it all off he has to get a job to help support the creepy lodger living in the house.
Enter Dame Evie Walton(Julie Walters) an eccentric and reclusive former actress who hires Ben as a part time companion. she drinks, swears with gusto, and in general turns Ben's repressed existence on it's head. At first Ben views Evie as just one more thing he is being forced into, the only bright spot is that he gets to spend large amounts of time out of the house away from mum. But Ben and Evie soon discover that they are kindred spirits who desperately need each other.
Walters and Grint are comic gold together, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie so much. Driving Lessons is truly entertaining coming of age story for anyone who's ever felt like an outsider. I highly recommend.
Movie Review: Where "Dead Poet's Society" Failed, Summary: 5 Stars
"Driving Lessons" succeeded. However simple the story may be, the messages and character dynamics are brilliant.
The story begins with Ben (played by Rupert Gint), a teenage boy raised by a repressive mother (Laura Linney) and passive father, acquiring a job with an older actress.
The film follows the two leads who play with the "old couple" dynamic; yet underneath, the story is about the actress, "Dame" Evie Walton, releasing the suppressed character of Ben. Throughout the film Ben blossoms as a writer and poet, discovering the good in life while faced with it's brevity.
Definitely worth watching. There's a lot of films which boast a sort of "grandeur" about poetry and youth, but essentially fall short and sometimes even flat. This story does not. It's simple, comedic and sweet without becoming contrived.
Movie Review: A must see! Summary: 5 Stars
I'll be honest by saying that I originally saw this movie because Rupert Grint (Ron from Harry Potter) plays the lead role. However, I never saw him as Ron Weasley, I saw him as Ben. He was brilliant as this character, who takes up a job caring for a retired woman, Evie. The two develop a close friendship, and Evie helps Ben cope with a troubled home life while Ben helps Evie come to terms with her past, and her future. The movie made me laugh, and made me tear up at certain parts. I watch this movie when I'm feeling down; it's cathartic, and leaves me feeling better by the end. It doesn't end the way you expect, and it's not even a happy ending...but it gives you a sense that life goes on. It actually touches on some deep issues, but always keeps a sense of humor. I would highly recommend this movie to everyone with a sense of humor.
Movie Review: Rupert Grint has grown up! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw Driving Lessons at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005, and I fell in love with it! I have always been a fan of Rupert, from the Harry Potter movies, and was excited to see him in another role. This was a great role for him to break out in. The first time he sayd f*ck, i was shocked! but it works incredibly well for the character Ben. There was a twist at the end i wasn't expecting, but I pretty much just wanted to give him a hug when the credits rolled up. I have been waiting for the DVD for AGES, and cannot wait to own it!!
Movie Review: Absolutely Brilliant. Summary: 5 Stars
This is an absolutely brilliant, organic coming of age story of a young man. It doesn't fall short at the end like so many do.
The characters were brilliantly casted and Julie does an unbelievable job as an eccentric older actress.
Laura Linney is in a role that I have never seen her in before and plays the deeply flawed mother perfectly.
I can't recommend this enough and I believe that Rupert Grint will go on to film many movies after Harry Potter.
