Movie Reviews of Dresden

Movie Review: A fine romance set at the scene of horrific carnage
Summary: 4 Stars

I knew a little about the terror bombing of Dresden, a city with no military significance. And I read Slaughterhouse Five, the Vonnegut novel about an unlikely time traveler who survives the firebombing of Dresden. But I thought it would be interesting to see the War from a German perspective.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Yes, as some reviewers have noted (ad nauseum) the film probably doesn't toe the line 100% concerning the history of the event. But I wasn't looking for a documentary.

The two leads, John Light and Felicitas Woll, are very good as a downed Allied bomber pilot and a nurse who discovers him. Woll, especially, is solid as a member of a well-to-do family caught up in the casualties and difficulties of war. Though the war has turned against Germany, and the outcome for a positive end for the Germans is fading, the family and the city haven't been really touched by the war. The British are about to change all of that, killing over 100,000 innocent Germans. If the outcome of the war had been different, it has been pointed out, the British planners of the bombing would have been hanged as war criminals.

The production values of the film/TV production are excellent. All the careful planning by Anna's father Carl (who has been diverting drugs to sell for cash for after the war) go up in flames, literally. And the romance between the two, one a loyal German, and the other charged with killing as many Germans as possible, though improbable, is not impossible. (Love sometimes doesn't make sense.)

Highly recommended. I really enjoyed the film, though I knew from the beginning that the ending would be gruesome. (It's a puzzle how supposedly civilized people could commission such an act.) The set design and production and computer graphics are top-notch for the budget. Four-and-one-half stars for 'Dresden'. This is well worth the time.

Movie Review: Dresden Bombing: a Romantic Drama
Summary: 4 Stars

Impressively done Brit-German anti-war TV-movie about WW II bombing of the German city of Dresden. The cast has many fine performers. Suspense & romance provide a strong one-two emotional punch.

While there's not a lot of combat action in the first half of the story, the last half focuses on the British bombing of Dresden and its disturbing impact on the civilian population. With the fine character development that took place in the early part of the story, the impact of the bombing scenes in the final episode is formidable.

This movie's high production costs have resulted in an excellent made-for-tv film that has the feel and look of a major film production. If you're looking for an accurate historical account of the Dresden bombing, I'd recommend a documentary. This movie was made to entertain more than inform, and it does that very well.

Movie Review: Lost
Summary: 4 Stars

A friend gave me a copy of "Dresden" and I watched it many times before giving it back and ordering my own copy. I watched the movie several times for different reasons: 1. History, 2. View from the German side, 3. View from the British side, 4. Acting skills. I love the movie, am impressed with F. Woll's in the main role. I think some scenes were too Hollywood, loved the honesty of the script, not too much violence, but one can start to feel the horror of the bombings and being trapped in cellars and on the ground by the devastating fires. I was a mistake, a big one, History was destroyed as it often is in wars. Did the Germans deserve this so much emotionally human reaction? Yes and No. Not only the Germans or the people of Dresden lost a jewel.

Movie Review: Terrific viewing
Summary: 4 Stars

A WWII historical drama/romance well worth watching. Shows the unbelievable horror of one of the worst outrages of the war.

The firebombing scenes are incredibly realistic, horrifying and heart-rending, and in a strange way beautiful. The flight sequences ditto.

The characters are excellent as are their portrayals. Even in the midst of war and pain, there are venal characters doing their worst. And there are gallant and humane characters doing theirs.

Don't miss this one. Can't wait until it is formatted for our region so I can buy it and watch again.

Movie Review: a pity they didn't choose better leads
Summary: 4 Stars

My true congratulations for director Richter's painstaking research on the fate of the German city of Dresden in 1945: his results are authentic and historically correct.

Given this solid foundation, I feel sorry for Richter's unhappy choice of his male & female lead. John Light convinces as a RAF bomber-pilot, but not as a love-match for German female lead Felicitas Woll: one feels their characters do not match.

As for Felicitas, one also wonders if she is in the right film. I think her talents are much better suited for light comedy or slapstick.
