Movie Reviews of Dragonfly (Widescreen)Movie Review: Film for the Spirit, Heart, and Mind ! Summary: 4 Stars
Dragonfly is one of those rare sleeper films about the supernatural and spiritual that comes and goes in the theatre without much of a buzz (no pun intended)!Or even if it did make a buzz was somehow forgotten by the movie going public ! While it's been compared to everything ever made in the film world about ghosts and the afterlife one thing remains to make it stand apart from the rest; It truly does tell a damn good story from beginning to end. The way it was directed and written keeps the viewer guessing to the very end as to what's inside the "rainbow" or at the end of the rainbow ! As astute as I like to think that I am when watching this genre of film even I wanted to know where Joe (Kevin Costner) was going (insane or to an actual place spiritual or otherwise)...Was his character's wife alive or dead ? I still could not figure out where the ending was leading to, until...well, just watch the film !Performance by Costner is, well Kevin Costner playing Kevin Costner,...which means that unless you're a fan of his (which I've never been) or enjoy films of the spiritual and supernatural then this will satisfy. Kathy Bates' neighbor/lawyer supporting role is cynical yet caring who watches out for Joe (and "Big Bird") but begins to seriously think he's loosing his grip on reality !She insists that he "move on" and "go on a trip". At times, the film could use a little more "moving along" but it still captivates the viewer's attention !
Movie Review: A slow start, but great story! Very cool bonus footage! Summary: 4 Stars
Dragonfly starts slow but builds into a very interesting story with an eye-opening and satisfying conclusion. Kevin Costner's portrayal of a doctor in mourning is convincing although his eager acceptance of the supernatural seems a little oddly motivated initially. As plot gets more bizarre his reactions get more extreme and that's where the film excels. Some other performances, particularly the child actors', are less believable. On the DVD version the deleted scenes are interesting, but not as sharp as the rest of the film. (Maybe deleted scenes are always like that, I've never been interested enough to watch them on any other DVD, which is a real compliment to the depth of this film.) The bonus material also includes the personal story of Betty Eadie's near death experience which is convincing and fascinating. Her story lends the movie a sense of believability even though Dragonfly focuses more on grief and belief than actual near death experiences. (If you're unfamiliar with Eadie's autobiographical "Embraced by the Light", look for it. It's one book that can really shatter your perceptions.) Dragonfly is a very enjoyable film that didn't get must press during its theatrical release but one you shouldn't dismiss.
Movie Review: Nice Movie with a Strange Ending Summary: 4 Stars
I caught this movie late one night and found myself staying up until the early morning hours watching it. It caught my attention and kept it for the entire film.
I give this a 4 star rating, and while I think it is a good movie and one viewers will enjoy, I couldn't get over the ending to the movie. While it is a touching moment, it's also completely unbelievable. I was left saying, 'What?' and giving the TV a dumbfounded look.
I also couldn't get past the friends of the Doctor and his wife. It felt like their purpose in the film was to tell him he was crazy and then *poof* they're gone, never to be seen again.
Kevin Costner has made some serious duds in his career (Waterworld, anyone?) BUT, this was one of his better movies. As others have said he came off as genuine in this movie instead of wooden. You'll be left asking yourself why Kevin couldn't make other movies like this one, but seriously, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the ending 3 years after seeing this.
I would recommend it.
Movie Review: Kinda interesting, but I liked the Bollywood version better Summary: 4 Stars
I was just told by a friend that this is the original release of a movie I've seen many years ago called "Saaya". The storylines were all pretty similar so if you liked "Dragonfly", then rent "Saaya." For one reason, everyone in Bollywood (India's Hollywood) is so much more beautiful and handsome as compared to Hollywood stars.
One big plus in "Saaya" is this: The doctor (Joe in this film, Aakash in "Saaya") is played by John Abraham (google some of his pictures, to see), and Aakash's wife Maya in "Saaya" is the beautiful Tara Sharma. And the greatest improvement to "Saaya" is, instead of the less-than-appealing, and hard-on-the-eyes, actress short-haired Kathy Bates, in "Saaya" we get the gorgeous Mahima Choudary.
So, I urge you. If you liked "Firefly", then you must see "Saaya."
Google these actors and actresses and you will definitely catch an interest in Bollywood films.
Movie Review: A solid 4... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fine film; unless you're either a pontificating, "professional" critic, or suffer from a self-imposed attention deficit disorder. Yes, it moves at a slow pace more often than not, and actually has a positive message to convey, god forbid.
It's also an atmospheric, well-acted, supernatural thriller that carries similar attributes to many other atmospheric, well-acted, supernatural thrillers that preceded it... surprise, surprise! And everyone has their own personal favs. So just let go of any preconceptions & let the flic stand on it's own merits. The resolution is fascinating to say the least, and oh so satisfying. I'm pretty cynical; but even true cynics understand the beauty & power of hope. "Dragonfly" is a not-so-subtle reminder to keep the faith, and run with thy intuition.
Did I mention the really great performance by the bird? The little guy really got to me.
