Movie Reviews of Dragon Inn

Movie Review: It's okay...
Summary: 3 Stars

...good action, and that's about it. A little too campy for my tastes, but you know, tastes vary. The story about the corrupt eunuchs in power and those fighting against them isn't exactly enthralling, and while the characters are reasonably charming there isn't much of any empathy to be felt when the semi-tragic conclusion comes to fruition. The swordplay is solid, however. The straight forward fight scenes are the best, such as the climactic fight in the desert. Soon as it gets over the top with wire acrobatics, however, it just doesn't quite measure up as well as it could. Too many cuts, not seamless, it's a bit distracting. The old school sword clashing choreography was working far better as it was actually impressive and entertaining. Overall, this is a film with pretty good action (though honestly, there probably wasn't even enough of that), campy dialogue and that's about it.

Movie Review: Welcome to Dragon Inn, hehehe...
Summary: 3 Stars

Dragon Inn is a story about good versus evil set in a secluded tavern in a remote desert. Chow Wai-on (Tony Leung Ka Fai) and Mo-yan Yau (Brigitte Lin) are trying to escape the merciless Tsao Sui Yan and his desire to build his own empire with two royal children. The escape leads them through a tavern, the Dragon Inn. This water-hole is run by the deceitful Jade King (Maggie Cheung) and her gang, where strange things happen at night. When they later try to depart from the Dragon Inn, they cannot leave. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place, which makes this film a cumbersome event.

Movie Review: B movie with Chopsticks
Summary: 3 Stars

This is not a Yuen Wo-ping masterpiece but a good cheesy throwback to the Shaw days when the audience in the theater and not the critics at the film festivals mattered most. Order the Chinese, pop the corn, stop trying to understand and enjoy.

Movie Review: Drag On Inn!
Summary: 2 Stars

The description of this dvd led me to expect a movie like "Musa" or "Warriors of Heaven and Earth"--I'd have even been happy with a movie comparable to "Crouching Tiger"--this movie isn't up to the standards of any of these movies though. More of a farce than anything close to an "adventure"-the scenery is wasted with a lame plot that drags on and makes the movie seem about twice as long as it really is. Perhaps if my own expectations had been lower--I wouldn't be so harsh on this movie--but compared to "Musa" or "Warriors of Heaven and Earth"--it's defintely sub standard. Different strokes--as they say--perhaps you'll enjoy this movie--I didn't!

Movie Review: Good movie, bad DVD
Summary: 2 Stars

Dragon Inn ranks high among costume martial arts films, and anyone who enjoys kooky, gravity-defying action scenes will enjoy it. The middle sags and the cannibalism subplot doesn't add much, but the battle at the end during a sandstorm is a must-see, as well as a beautifully balletic scene in which Brigette Lin and Maggie Cheung spar. Unfortunately, this "remastered" DVD is really just another Tai Seng rush job with a really grainy picture. It doesn't look much better than VHS. This movie deserves better.
