Movie Reviews of Dragnet 1967 - Season 1

Movie Review: THE NAMES FRIDAY....SGT FRIDAY
Summary: 4 Stars

"Dragnet" Season One contains all 17 episodes from the show's first season from (1967). The 17 episodes are spread out over two double sided discs (plus a third bonus cd disc with a radio broadcast from 1954). This release from Universal Studios is a complete waste of disc space. The first double sided disc contains 14 episodes while the second disc contains only 3 episodes, so it really is a waste of disc space. The video transfer is very good, although the video image does suffer from some dirt and debris. The sound is pretty decent for a show this old, so no complaints. I bought this set at WalMart during their boxing week sale, so I really got a bargain. I hope Universal does a better job with the remaining seasons of "Dragnet" and they make it to DVD.

* Bonus CD

Movie Review: Mr. Rudd - OF COURSE IT'S THE DISCS! - It's NOT the DVD player!
Summary: 4 Stars

Some players will play these discs better than others. I have a very old Magnavox DVD player that plays most of these episodes without too many problems.

On the other hand, I have a brand new Sony player that I paid an arm and a leg for, and all they do is freeze up. Is my new player dirty? I don't think so! In fact, I went ahead and cleaned it anyway, and it still does the same thing! OF COURSE it's the discs!

Like I said, some DVD players will play these discs, but some (most) won't. OF COURSE it's the discs!

And what about the cheap packaging, the terrible authoring, etc? I mean, who else besides Universal would put out a double-sided disc with 3 episodes on one side and nothing on the other? Good thinking, Huh? OF COURSE it's the discs!

Can EVERYONE be wrong besides you, Mr. Rudd? Maybe you should give everyone a technical rundown on how to go about inserting a cleaning disc! If EVERYONE's DVD player is dirty, then why does EVERYTHING ELSE (besides the Universal stuff) in my 500+ collection play without any problems? OF COURSE it's the discs!

Is it really possible that anyone smart enough to enjoy a show like Dragnet is so stupid that they never clean their DVD player? Do you really think they stood there saying "DUH? What do I do now?" I'm sure MOST watchers of Dragnet probably figured out that they should try cleaning these "highly sensitive" machines to see if that would do the trick. Obviously, it didn't. OF COURSE it's the discs!!

Movie Review: People who rented this from Netflix will be confused
Summary: 4 Stars

Yes, I rented this from Netflix, too. It says it's a 2 DVD set. I received them, and they are NOT double sided. The reason? Netflix rips off their customers. The fact of the matter is the version that Netflix has of this DVD is a 3 DVD set. Yes, there is a 3rd DVD (NOT the bonus CD that comes with this set commercially). When you add the series to your Netflix queue it clearly states it's a 2 DVD set. But then do a search for Dragnet '67. You will see the '2 disc season 1 set' PLUS a disc on its own called 'Dragnet '67, Season 1 Disc 3'. I have noticed Netflix sometimes gets specially made DVDs for their services. In this case they took a double sided DVD and made it into 2 separate DVDs. The third DVD has the missing 3 episodes, but you have to search for that separately and add it to your queue. Basically Netflix wants you to have to rent more, and they messed up when they added this title to their database. Hope that clarifies the confusion to the people saying these DVDs aren't double sided - they are if you buy it. I tried to point out the error to Netflix but their incompetant Customer Service team didn't understand a word. Oh, by the way, great show.

Movie Review: Excellent Series - Finally on DVD!
Summary: 4 Stars

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm still just thrilled to be able to put a disk in a player, whenever I want, and watch some of my favorite TV shows. Reading about how some are upset that there is only one radio show, that there are no extras, etc....I can only say that that doesn't bother me in the least. What I was paying for was the First Season of Dragnet - and I now have it and can watch all of the episodes from Season One anytime I want. When I was growing up, to think we would someday have the capability to do that was far-fetched. I'm just glad to have the shows --- and the other stuff? --- whatever they put in extra is nice I suppose, but it's not the extras I have waited years to be able to purchase. Thank you Universal for making this available. I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting Dragnet 1968!

Movie Review: Excellent show, technical problems
Summary: 4 Stars

It's about time that these great episodes were released on DVD; the only improvement would have been some additional commentary. But I have had nothing but technical problems with the DVD set. The second episode wouldn't play at all, so I returned it to Amazon for a another copy. This set would freeze up every 1-2 minutes. I sent it back for a refund and bought the set at my local Target. Same problem on different episodes!! Where is the quality control? If this is a problem with older dvd players (mine's about 4 years old), that information should be made known.

Epilogue: It was my dvd player. I have since purchased a new one and have had no problems playing the dvd's. Now my question is: Where's Season 2 and Season 3??
