Movie Reviews of Dracula

Movie Review: Rich in atmospehere and suspence
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember I watched this movie when I was about 10 years old, and it scared the crap out of me. Mainly because of the two female vampires, Lucy and Mina. Mina has to be the most frightening vampire I have ever seen on film.

The excellent music by John Williams, gives this movie an extra dimension to it. Frank Langella, last seen as the editor in chief of the Daily Planet in "Superman Returns", gives a strong performance as the lovesick and bloodthirsty count Dracula. The late Donald Pleaseance and Laurence Olivier, plays Dr. Seward and Dr. Van Helsing, Draculas greatest enemies.

To sum it up: Great actors, scary vampires, rich gothic atmosphere and a great musical score by John Williams, makes this production from 1979, one of the best Dracula movies ever.

Movie Review: Still scary
Summary: 5 Stars

[...]. I just want to add my thoughts on what I think is the single most scary scene in a movie adaption of Bram Stoker's classic so far. The scene were Van Helsing and Seward confront what was once Mina, Van Helsing's daughter in the catacombs underneath the graveyard scared the living hell out of me when I was a kid. Too bad they drained the color from the movie in its new version...All of you who know the original will know what I mean. This scene sent me and my buddy vampire hunting on our local cemetery with self made wooden pickets. When we entered the cemetery gates after dusk some graveyard candles that very much reminded us of Mina's glowing eyes in that particular scene sent us running homeward, [...]...A true classic :o)

Movie Review: The Definitive Dracula Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it at age twelve. As far as I'm concerned, this is THE definitive Dracula movie (with Coppola's version running a close second).

Count Dracula comes to England and movies into a run-down castle called Carfax Abbey. He immediately befriends his neighbors, Dr. Jack Seward and his daughter Lucy. From the gitgo Dracula and Lucy are attracted to each other, and watching this attraction come to fruition will put you at the edge of your seat. It doesn't get any better than Lucy's dinner date with Dracula, followed by him appearing in her bedroom the next night.

After you watch this movie, you will always see Frank Langella as Dracula.

Movie Review: I love this movie - as a movie, not as a Horror Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Important distinction. Taken apart from every other Dracula film, this is a wonderful take on the story - with Dracula popping up in England. The film, by avoiding the Transylvania prologue and moving the action direct to England, builds a swirling air of mystery around the Count. A ship has wrecked, boxes delivered for the count are full of dirt...and a wolf was the only survivor - until Dracula is found waterlogged and hiding in a cave. Then, it kicks in. This is all about the romance and Gothic melodrama/mystery. Watch it in that spirit and you can't go wrong. BTW, those laser-lights were a big deal in 79 and most films don't age well when held up to scrutiny.

Movie Review: WOW! Great extras....
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so excited this was finally released on DVD. I just adore Frank Langella. Wait till you see the extras on this DVD. There is about 40 minutes worth of interviews with John Badham and Frank Langella, talking specifically about the making of the movie. I learned so much about the movie I had never known before; like the names of the houses and castles that were used in the film, how they filmed certain scenes, etc. Just getting this extra was well worth buying the DVD. The photo gallery was a little disappointing; you have to manually move from picture to picture, and there's absolutely no music at all in the picture gallery.
